Honda Super Bowl Commercial: Ferris Bueller Spot Will Be More Epic Than Big Game

Adam WellsJun 7, 2018

Of all the Super Bowl commercials that have been announced this year, the one with Matthew Broderick reprising his role as Ferris Bueller is drawing the most buzz. In fact, there is nothing that the New York Giants or New England Patriots can do that will come close to matching this Honda ad.

Let's be honest: The reason that the Super Bowl routinely draws over 100 million television viewers is because of the commercials. As sports fans, we like to think that this game is so important that everyone has to watch. That's garbage.

Companies go out of their way to put out their best and most innovative spots of the year. Honda is sitting on a goldmine with Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Part Deux

In the nearly 26 years since the movie was released, the character of Ferris Bueller is still very much a part of our lives. No person over the age of 10 years old can say that they have not seen the film, or at least some part of it that has been used in some other movie or television show.

The long version of the ad has been making its way around the Internet for the last two days, and it already has almost four million views. Everyone knows Ferris Bueller, and it is impossible to not be excited about seeing this beloved character reprised during the biggest sporting event in this country.

If there is one small nitpick with the commercial, it would be that selling out for a car company would not be a very "Ferris Bueller" thing to do. But when we can all relive some nostalgic piece of our youth with Matthew Broderick in his most famous role, who cares whether it stays consistent with the character?

The Giants and Patriots can try their best, but unless they play the greatest Super Bowl in the 46-year history of this game, there is no way that they can compete with a 30 or 60-second spot that plays as a condensed version of the best parts of the beloved John Hughes movie.

It is not a perfect commercial, simply because there are two very important pieces missing from the puzzle: Cameron and Sloane. There is no Ferris Bueller without those two by his side, so it does lack that extra something.

But just seeing Matthew Broderick burst into the middle of a giant musical number for no apparent reason is enough to make this one of the best Super Bowl spots ever.
