Royal Rumble 2012: WWE Destroyed Chris Jericho's Heel Turn

Adam WellsJun 7, 2018

Chris Jericho's heel turn was supposed to be a big moment for WWE this year. He teased it last week on Raw, saying that the Royal Rumble was going to be the "end of the world as you know it."

Instead of doing something special, he was the last man eliminated and the show ended.

To make matters worse, Jericho came out on Raw last night during the CM Punk-Daniel Bryan match to dispatch of the World Heavyweight Champion before delivering a Codebreaker to the WWE Champion.

So not only did Jericho's heel turn have no impact on the Rumble show, he was given a five-second turn in a match that he was not involved in.

There was hope when Jericho returned earlier this month that his character was building to some big heel turn that would have an impact felt throughout the wrestling world for the next couple of months leading up to WrestleMania.

Maybe there is more to the story that WWE wants to tell. But considering that the creative team changed the finish of the Rumble just because most insiders and Internet marks had figured out that Jericho was going to win it doesn't provide a lot of hope.

Perhaps we should just enjoy the fact that Jericho and Punk are going to be in one of the top matches at WrestleMania, and, if they are given enough time, could have the best pure-wrestling match on the biggest show of the year.

But when you think of how much bigger and how much more special this whole thing could have been by doing the planned finish at the Rumble and not wasting Jericho's heel turn for some random moment during a great television match ruins the impact that something like this should have.

This whole story and the way that Jericho was booked last night is very appropriate for WWE in 2012. Nothing gets followed through the way that it should. Everything is done to throw off the dirt sheet writers instead of, you know, doing what is in the best interest of business.
