Lakers Rumors: Gilbert Arenas Is Not Enough to Save LA's Struggling Offense

The Los Angeles Lakers are reportedly looking at signing Gilbert Arenas to rescue their struggling offense. According the LA Times:

Meanwhile, the Lakers are discussing internally whether to pursue free-agent guard Gilbert Arenas, though they haven't invited him for a workout and are leaning toward not signing him.

"

That the Lakers are even considering this shows how desperate they are. I mean just think of the jokes that could come from it.

In fact, let's have a contest here. Who can come up with the best punchline for the joke that follows "Metta World Peace and Gilbert Arenas walk into a bar..."

Of course, the scary thing is that might not be a joke if this happens. Can you think of two more combustible players to put together? I sure can't. 

When you consider that, and the way that Arenas played last year, it's a risk-reward scenario that is very heavy on the risk side and very light on the reward side. Arenas scored 8.0 points per game on .344 shooting and .275 form the three. 

The Lakers need a point guard, but Arenas isn't really a point guard anymore. He's a shooting guard who can't shoot. He doesn't facilitate well. He only averaged 5.2 assists per 36 minutes last year.

So if the answer to the problem for the Lakers is adding a point guard who doesn't facilitate, doesn't shoot, doesn't guard and adds even more potential personality issues to the team, Arenas is your man. 

If you're looking for a point guard who facilitates, guards and makes the offense work, then you might want to start looking elsewhere. Gilbert Arenas is not your man.
