Royal Rumble 2012 Results: John Cena Won't Turn Heel After Puzzling Match

Eric BallJun 7, 2018

John Cena officially will never turn heel.

The creative team at WWE had the perfect opportunity to turn him over to the dark side in his Royal Rumble bout against the "Big Red Machine" Kane and they dropped the ball.

The match was more of a brawl than anything else, which was right up Cena’s alley. His street-fighting style was on full display in the somewhat boring match. He played his typical role as hero and it was the opposite of compelling.

Kane was able to block most of Cena’s trademark moves as the pace seemed to move as fast as a snail. It ended in a double count-out and it solidified that Cena will always be a “good guy.”

He could have joined forces with Kane to take on CM Punk or maybe even have turned heel as Kane somehow turned to the other side of the spectrum. OK, maybe that’s a stretch, but I had a strong feeling Cena would emerge from Sunday night with a whole new persona.

There’s nothing wrong with that I suppose, but he is beginning to turn into a stale character if you ask me. Sure, he has the big match against The Rock on the horizon, but where else will the creative team go with it? They had so many different angles to work with if WWE’s pretty boy was to turn heel. Instead, he will be endlessly promoting the WrestleMania bout for the next three months.

It’s going to be a lot more of the same.

Then again, on a night when Sheamus shockingly won Royal Rumble, maybe the creative team didn’t want to completely turn the wrestling world upside down.
