Ohio State Recruiting: 7 Things the Buckeyes Are Hoping for on NSD
The clock is ticking for Ohio State football coach Urban Meyer as he rustles up his final bid for the top high school athletes yet to commit to a team.
National Signing Day begins on Wednesday, February 1 and although he's brought in an impressive list of recruits so far, Meyer still has an eye on a few others.
Here are seven players the Buckeyes hope to sign on National Signing Day.
Note: All resources come from OhioState.Scout.com.
Joel Caleb, WR
1 of 7Height/Weight: 6'2"/200 lbs.
National Rank: 31
National Rating: 4-star
Interest Level: High
Also Considering: Virginia Tech, West Virginia, Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Notre Dame, Penn State, Tennessee, Virginia
Bio: A versatile high school quarterback that would likely be used at wide receiver due to the Buckeyes' lack of production in that area. He is savvy with the spread option and could be utilized early in Wildcat situations, especially with the ability to make downfield plays and break loose tackles at will. Caleb "loved" his trip to Columbus in December and could very well be wearing scarlet and gray next season.
Kyle Dodson, OT
2 of 7Height/Weight: 6'6"/310 lbs.
National Rank: 24
National Rating: 4-star
Interest Level: Medium
Also Considering: Wisconsin, Auburn, Michigan, Michigan State, USC, Alabama, Cincinnati, Connecticut, Illinois, Iowa State, Louisville, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Carolina State, Notre Dame, Ohio, Pittsburgh, South Florida, Vanderbilt, Virginia, West Virginia
Bio: Dodson has experience blocking for the spread, which is why Meyer is going after him. His size and power are his best assets and he will only get better as he develops at the next level. The Wisconsin soft commit will have a big decision to make on Wednesday.
Demetrious Cox, S
3 of 7Height/Weight: 6'1"/185 lbs.
National Rank: 8
National Rating: 4-star
Interest Level: Medium
Also Considering: Michigan State, Notre Dame, Penn State, Pittsburgh, Wisconsin
Bio: Ohio State lacked in 2011 what Cox possesses: sure tackling skills. The safety comes from former OSU quarterback Terrelle Pryor's high school—Jeannette in Pennsylvania—and knows how to wrap the defender up. He recently took his fourth official visit to Columbus and says he "likes what Urban Meyer is building at Ohio State."
Armani Reeves, CB
4 of 7Height/Weight: 5'10"/185 lbs.
National Rank: 6
National Rating: 4-star
Interest Level: High
Also Considering: Michigan, Penn State, Boston College, Connecticut, Iowa, Maryland, Massachusetts, Memphis, Michigan State, Missouri, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Rutgers, Stanford, Virginia, Wake Forest
Bio: NBA Hall of Famer Charles Barkley is Reeves' first cousin, so athleticism runs in the family. The Massachusetts native runs a 4.41-second 40-yard dash and is a threat on special teams as well as defense. It currently looks as if Reeves is deciding between attending Ohio State and Michigan.
Davonte' Neal, CB
5 of 7Height/Weight: 5'9"/175 lbs.
National Rank: 5
National Rating: 4-star
Interest Level: High
Also Considering: Arizona, Arkansas, North Carolina, Notre Dame, Arizona State, Auburn, LSU, Miami (Fl), Northwestern, Oregon State, Penn State, Texas A&M, UCLA, USC, Utah, Washington
Bio: Scout.com rates Davonte' Neal as one of the best lockdown corners in the country. He has the ability to play on either side of the football due to his outstanding speed and agility. Like Armani Reeves, Neal is a huge threat as a return man and could make an immediate impact as a freshman. The Buckeyes are first on his list, with Arizona close behind.
Jordan Diamond, OT
6 of 7Height/Weight: 6'6"/290 lbs.
National Rank: 8
National Rating: 5-star
Interest Level: Medium
Also Considering: Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Auburn, Florida State, Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, Michigan State, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Oregon, Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Wisconsin
Bio: His recent visit to Michigan showed him "opportunity" with the Wolverines, but it's not certain who Diamond will be signing with on National Signing Day. He's a highly aggressive offensive lineman with the drive to continue his success at the collegiate level. A guy like this could potentially start his freshman year with the Buckeyes.
Stefon Diggs, WR
7 of 7Height/Weight: 6'0"/185 lbs.
National Rank: 2
National Rating: 5-star
Interest Level: Medium
Also Considering: Auburn, California, Florida, USC, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Florida State, Maryland, Miami (Fl), Michigan, Oklahoma, South Carolina
Bio: The DeSean Jackson-like receiver can line up from anywhere on the field and be a threat to score. His speed is one of many strengths and he can make defenders look like peewee players in the open field. A receiver, cornerback and return specialist, Diggs racked up 1,443 all-purpose yards, 13 touchdowns, 32 tackles and four interceptions as a senior. He had 811 yards receiving and 23 touchdowns as a junior. He's still considering Ohio State, but he recently stated that Auburn is "sitting good" for him.
