NHL All-Star Game 2012: Former No. 1 Draft Picks Will Steal the Show

Patrick ClarkeJun 2, 2018

There are sure to be fireworks in Ottawa, Canada on Sunday afternoon when Team Chara and Team Alfredsson meet in the 59th edition of the NHL All-Star Game (4:00 p.m. ET, NBC SN). However, the show won't belong to the fans or the two pumped-up captains either, but instead the trio of former No. 1 picks suiting up.

The Tampa Bay Lightning's Steven Stamkos, the Chicago Blackhawks' Patrick Kane and the New York Islanders' John Tavares will all be in action and all three were taken with the No. 1 overall pick in three of the past five seasons.

Young and talented will be the name of the game on Sunday afternoon. Kane is the oldest of the three at age 23, but their combined age is 65, which is nearly as many goals as the three have between them midway through this season.

The three young guns have combined for 63 goals this season despite playing for struggling teams. The Lightning and Islanders are in danger of missing the playoffs in the Eastern Conference, while the Blackhawks sit at No. 6 in the Western Conference standings.

Stamkos and Tavares will be lighting it up for Team Alfredsson, while Kane will be playing alongside Chicago teammate Marian Hossa on Team Chara.

Meanwhile, goaltenders Tim Thomas and Henrik Lundqvist will be facing a barrage of shots from some of hockey's best offensive weapons. But let's face it, no one is tuning into an NHL All-Star Game to see legendary goal-tending, they want to see goals and star power.

That being said, goals and star power are certain to steal the show on Sunday afternoon. On a day when the NFL puts its top stars on the main stage in the Pro Bowl, hockey can rest assured that these three former No. 1 picks will outshine any NFL touch football game in Hawaii.
