Brandon Weeden's Senior Bowl Performance Will Kill His Draft Stock
Brandon Weeden erased a head-turning week of practice with a horrible showing in the Senior Bowl, and with that, the senior QB from Oklahoma State just made his uphill NFL Draft battle a little more hilly.
Weeden put up amazing stats in college, but he accumulated them in a wide-open spread offense. This is always a red flag for scouts, as the spread offense is built on quick throws where the QB is making one read.
However, that red flag is not his biggest concern. That would be attributed to his age. Weeden, a former minor league baseball player, will be 29 when the next NFL season starts.
Barring Weeden running his DeLorean into a bolt of lightning, he is not going to change his age. He was in a position to ease the concerns of his transition into a pro-style offense, though, and that is where he failed.
Week of Practice
Weeden started off strong. He was making people take notice as he dominated practices leading up to the game. Here is Bleacher Report's NFL talent guru, Matt Miller.
He certainly wasn't the only one to come away impressed.
Unfortunately, for Weeden and his draft stock, they played the game.
The Game
Weeden was just 5-of-9 with 56 yards and two interceptions.
As this fan points out, one interception can be easily excused, but two in nine attempts? Not so much.
Weeden was asked to run a pro-style offense and he failed. He made bad decisions and forced the ball into places where shouldn't have.
Draft Stock
Weeden has all the physical tools to succeed in the NFL. The problem is that at his age, he comes with little upside.
The fact that he struggled in a pro-style offense makes that upside look even smaller.
If this elder prospect is going to make any significant impact in the NFL, he is going to have to adapt to the NFL game quickly. He showed with this performance that he has a long ways to go.
Weeden is now likely staring at a fifth-round selection.
