Australian Open 2012 Scores: Bryan Brothers Continue to Prove Doubles Dominance
Bob and Mike Bryan are proving once again that they rule the doubles roost.
The American twins, known for their enthusiastic chest bump after wins, will be looking to claim their 12th Grand Slam title when they face off with Leander Paes and Radek Stepanek on Saturday. It would be their four straight triumph in the Australian Open.
They have been ranked No. 1 for nearly 280 weeks, which equates to more than five years, and have been flat out dominant for most of that time. The pair's chemistry is unmatched, they are twins after all, and that gives them a major advantage every time they step on the court.
The Bryan brothers don't get as much respect as they deserve because doubles tennis doesn't get much coverage. It's unfortunate because their reign over the division is as good or better than any other streak in sports right now.
One of the major reasons they have been able to basically own doubles for a decade is because of their dedication. A lot of their opponents, especially in major events, are teams of players randomly coming together, not a pure doubles team like them.
It also helps that Bob plays left-handed and Mike plays right-handed. That allows for much better court coverage and adds some variation to their games. They are truly the perfect team.
They both have enough talent to be singles players if they wanted to do that instead, but they've stuck together and decided to chase records. It's resulted in one of the most storied careers in doubles history, right up there with Todd Woodbridge and Mark Woodforde.
When it's all said and done they will go down as the best doubles team to ever play the sport. No other team in history can claim to have been so superior to their competition for as long as the Bryan brothers have.
Maybe once they call it quits, which is probably still quite some time away, they'll finally get the recognition they deserve for their truly remarkable careers.
As for now, they'll gladly accept another Australian Open trophy while continuing to add to their various leads in the record book.
