Australian Open 2012 Scores: Day 12 Scores and Results Summary

Wes ODonnellJun 4, 2018

It took all of five sets and then some, but the men's final at the 2012 Australian Open is officially set.

And it is exactly what we all wanted.

Novak Djokovic persevered through some stamina issues to finally knocked off Andy Murray, his opponent in last year's Aussie Open final, in an epic clash that left both players exhausted.

It wasn't easy, and it did look for a time that Murray may be able to pull the upset, but Djokovic rallied to dominate the fourth set 6-1 and took the fifth 7-5.

All together the match result looked like this: 6-3, 3-6, 6-7 (4-7), 6-1, 7-5.

Now Novak Djokovic is heading back to the final to defend his title against a familiar face: Rafael Nadal.

The two superstars of the tennis world met in the finals of Wimbledon and US Open and will do so again Sunday night.

Should Djokovic win, he'd be one of only four players to win three straight major tournaments ever.

Interestingly enough, one of those four players is his opponent.

This was the men's semifinal we all wanted and now we have the final we wanted as well.

The women's final was already set before today's men's semifinal and on Saturday third-seeded Victoria Azarenka will take on fourth-seeded Maria Sharapova.

The tennis world couldn't have asked for a better start to the season, and the 2012 Australian Open set the bar extremely high for the remaining Grand Slams.
