2012 NFL Draft: Alabama's DeQuan Menzie Displaying Versatility at Senior Bowl

Sanjay KirpalaniJun 2, 2018

DeQuan Menzie last played safety during his freshman season—at Shaw High School in his hometown of Columbus, Ga.

However, new Redskins defensive backs coach Raheem Morris tried out the Crimson Tide corner on the last line of defense during practice for the 2012 Senior Bowl.

The ability to line up as a cover corner, yet play safety or even match up against slot receivers is a valuable skill that could boost his draft stock.

Menzie was part of a loaded secondary at Alabama that included likely first-round picks in corner Dre Kirkpatrick and safety Mark Barron.

Because of the embarrassment of riches in the Tide secondary, Menzie received most of the action with opposing quarterbacks choosing to throw in his direction.

His film exemplifies that he was more than up to the challenge, which he is hoping will garner the attention of the litany of NFL scouts on hand this week in Mobile.

“I think it will give me a real edge on other (corners) since I was able to lock down one side of the field,” Menzie said.

Alabama head coach Nick Saban is often lauded for his ability to mold defensive backs that turn into quality NFL players, and Menzie—while not as highly regarded as Barron or Kirkpatrick—is anxious to prove that he is ready to be Saban’s next protégé to find success in the NFL.

“I think [being coached by Saban] will benefit me tremendously because he’s a great DB coach,” Menzie said.  “All of the stuff he taught me, I took it in and watched a lot of film and learned to critique myself so I feel like that will help me at the next level.“

The South roster is filled with talented wideouts, but do not expect Menzie to back down from any of them.

After all, he learned plenty from going against former Tide star and current Atlanta Falcons playmaker Julio Jones during their time together in Tuscaloosa.

“Just being more physical,” Menzie said.  “He always taught me that, and to shoot my hands (on contact) and the rest will take care of itself.”

NFL scouts are notorious for throwing curveballs to the prospects in attendance for the Senior Bowl, but Menzie took the adjustments in stride.

“Ah man, it doesn’t matter,” Menzie said regarding a position change at the next level.  “Where ever I fit in, I’ll be ready.”
