Georgia Football Recruiting: Top Targets, Positional Needs and Predictions

Brian JonesJun 7, 2018

Year in and year out, the Georgia Bulldogs always have a solid recruiting class, and with Signing Day only a few days away, it looks as if the Bulldogs will have another class that will be expected to contribute right away.

But just like any recruiting season, the Bulldogs have missed on some targets for various reasons. They may have originally committed to play for Mark Richt, but they have had a change of heart. Or for other reasons they can’t control, they have to de-commit to UGA but have hopes for playing in Athens in the near future.

And even with Signing Day only days away and with the Bulldogs hitting on the majority of their targets, they still want to grab a few more players before the big day. Richt and the rest of the coaching staff have been hard at work to get the last few uncommitted players to convince them that UGA is the place to play.

One of the Bulldogs' main areas of concern this recruiting season has been the offensive line. They have addressed the issue by getting commitments from Mark Beard, Greg Pike and 5-star recruit John Theus.

However, the Bulldogs took a hit from that position when Chester Brown de-committed due to “personal issues." But what many people had said the reason he de-committed was his application was rejected due to a Georgia Board of Regents Policy immigration issue.

Nonetheless, the Bulldogs have addressed the offensive line, and in the process, addressed other needs as well, such as running back, kicker and defensive line.

But the Bulldogs are still working hard to get some of the top players in the state, as well as the country.

One of the Bulldogs' top targets is Josh Harvey Clemons, who is a linebacker from Valdosta, Ga. In fact, it’s safe to say Clemons is the top target for Georgia because Richt went to church and jail when he went to visit Clemons in Valdosta.

No, Richt did not get into any trouble; Clemons' grandfather is a co-owner of a Bail-Bondsman service, and Richt was there to give the elder Clemons, Woodrow,  an ID he left at the church. Josh Harvey-Clemons will make his decision on Feb. 1.

But there are other targets Georgia hopes to nab on Signing Day. Jake Rowe of Rivals said that OL Brandon Greene, who has committed to Alabama, is still being pursued by the Bulldogs, as well as WR JaQuay Williams, who has committed to Auburn. If Williams changes, he would be the second receiver to commit to the Bulldogs behind Blake Tibbs, and if Greene changes to the Bulldogs, he would be the second offensive tackle to sign, as Theus was the first.

The Bulldogs also hope to get offensive lineman Avery Young of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. and wide receiver Cordarrelle Patterson of Hutchinson (Kan.) Community College.

So here’s what I think is going to happen. Clemons will commit to Georgia as well as Williams. Young and Patterson will also commit, but Greene will stick with the Tide.

Also, don’t be surprised if the Bulldogs don’t hit 25 signees. As of now, the Bulldogs have 16 commitments and will hit at least 20 before Wednesday.

But no matter what happens, the Bulldogs had another strong recruiting season, and if the players work hard on and off the field, the Bulldogs will have a very bright future.
