Floyd Mayweather: Who Other Than Pacquiao Would Make for Entertaining Fights?
With Floyd Mayweather's given fight date of May 5 getting closer, and the proposed superfight with Manny Pacquiao looking dead in the water, which other fighters could make for an entertaining bout with Pretty Boy Floyd?
Here we take a look at some of the options that have not been as widely discussed as others, a couple that have and some which might just be pipe dreams.
Most importantly of all, we will outline which could provide fight fans with an entertaining bout to watch.
The matchup that would be most acceptable to fans (away from Pacquiao) would be Sergio Martinez. However, it is unlikely that both sets of handlers would allow the fight to happen.
Martinez could be perceived as too dangerous for Pretty Boy. He will only fight Martinez at 150, where Martinez hasn't fought for almost nine years.
While Martinez has seemed receptive to the idea, it is unlikely that his handlers will let him go down that low.
Now that Sergio is slated to fight Matthew Macklin on March 17, any possible fight with Mayweather would have to wait.
The most interesting option could prove to be a former victim of Martinez.
Paul Williams has complained of being ducked by the sports biggest stars in the past. His perceived danger may be less now that his career has stagnated somewhat since his brutal knockout at the hands of Sergio Martinez.
The problem with Williams would be the commercial viability of the fight for Mayweather.
With the likes of Saul Alvarez likely to promise more money, Williams may once again find it hard to get the big fight.
From a fan point of view, Williams provides the most intriguing matchup.
Williams' freakishly long reach means that he will be a threat to anyone he fights, particularly when he goes down in weight.
He should have the tools to trouble Mayweather's solid defense, and has knockout power, even at at 147.
The fact that Williams has not fought at welterweight since 2008 could be a problem but hopefully that will be enough for Mayweather to take the fight.
Williams fights James Kirkland conqueror Nobuhiro Ishida on February 18, so could be ready to fight Floyd on May 5.
Another possibility could be the winner of the February 11 fight between Victor Ortiz and Andre Berto.
The winner of this fight will be the most worthy contender currently active in the welterweight division.
The more intriguing in this scenario would be if Victor Ortiz won and set up a rematch with Mayweather.
Ortiz was outfought when he faced Mayweather last September, but due to what many fans saw as an unsatisfactory end to the fight, a rematch could be captivate fans interest.
If Andre Berto wins that fight then he could become a viable challenger to Mayweather.
We haven't seen Mayweather wobbled very often, but Shane Mosely showed that it was possible in the third round of their fight.
Berto has the power to possibly trouble Mayweather. If he has improved in the last year then perhaps he could make for a good fight with Money.
The Haitian may not be the biggest name out there for Mayweather to face, but with names such as Erik Morales and Paulie Malignaggi being mentioned, he would be more entertaining.
