The 5 Most Ridiculously Overrated Players of the 2012 NFL Draft

Bradlee RossJun 7, 2018

The 2012 NFL Draft is full of overrated players who were propelled to higher status on mock drafts for dumb reasons. Guys like Texas A&M's Ryan Tannehill and Alabama's Dre Kirkpatrick are very good examples.

They are overrated for many reasons. It could be that they are not suited to the position that they play, they lack the physical skills to excel on the NFL level or they just aren't as good as advertised.

Here are five guys that are ridiculously overrated heading into the 2012 NFL Draft.

Ryan Tannehill

1 of 5

Ryan Tannehill is rated by most as the third or fourth best quarterback available in the draft. Really?

Based on what? Tannehill was a big part of why Texas A&M had a disappointing season this past year as he "picked" them out of many games. NFL teams should be worried about his questionable decision-making in tough spots.

He can be a good quarterback in the future I think, but he should not be as highly rated because he still has a lot to learn. That is especially true considering that he did not play quarterback for even two full seasons at A&M.

Dre Kirkpatrick

2 of 5

I actually like Dre Kirkpatrick as a football player. However, he is not a first-round caliber corner.

The main reason is that he just isn't fast enough to stay with an NFL receiver. He does have good size at 6'2", but the quickness isn't there.

I can see a team drafting him if they wanted to convert him to safety, but not in the first round as a corner.

Robert Griffin III

3 of 5

There is a decent chance that Robert Griffin III is a system quarterback. In college, he didn't play in anything even remotely similar to a pro-style system. He's very smart, but it takes more than smarts to adjust to that type of offense.

Griffin throws the long ball very well. However, when teams took that long ball away, he struggled. Only one team, Oklahoma State, was able to do that all year and Griffin tossed two interceptions in the first half of that game, en route to a 35-0 halftime deficit. He was only able to have success when the Cowboys put in second and third-stringers in the second half.

Griffin does have the skills to play at the next level, but he isn't anywhere near as finished a product as many will tell you. I'm fine with him in the first round, but not in the Top 15.

Quinton Coples

4 of 5

Quinton Coples is overrated. At 6'6" and 285 pounds, Coples is a tweener. He's right in between what he needs to be for defensive tackle or defensive end.

He is a good athlete, but he's had most of his success at the college level by just out-athleting opponents, which is not something he can do in the NFL.

I like drafting him if you want to improve your pass rush, but the Top 10 rating that some have given him is way too high.

Michael Brockers

5 of 5

As with the others guys on this list, I like this guy as a player. But he is massively overrated on just about every draft board you can find.

Brockers has just two seasons of experience at the college level and it shows. He shows poor discipline sometimes and is still very raw. He needs time to develop.

That's not what you want in a Top 15 guy. Those guys are supposed to come in immediately and make an impact. Brockers won't. He has great potential, but needs more time to develop.
