Senior Bowl 2012: What Experts Are Saying About Kellen Moore and Other QBs
This week at the 2012 Senior Bowl represents an important part of the pre-draft process for several NFL-hopeful quarterbacks, including Boise State's Kellen Moore.
Let's take a look at how draft experts from Sports Illustrated, Sporting News and Pro Football Weekly weighed in on Moore and several other quarterback prospects in Mobile, Ala.
Kellen Moore, Boise State
From Tony Pauline of Sports Illustrated: QB Kellen Moore shows terrific timing on his passes. The consensus is he'll be a No. 3 quarterback for a West Coast offense in the NFL.
From Russ Lande of Sporting News: Moore did not look like an NFL quarterback. His throwing motion was elongated, the ball lacked zip coming out of his hand and his accuracy was terrible. On numerous deep routes, the ball hung in the air, exposing his lack of arm strength.
From Pro Football Weekly: Boise State QB Kellen Moore had an up-and-down practice and really seemed to struggle to drive the ball on downfield throws.
Brandon Weeden, Oklahoma State
From Lande: He displayed outstanding arm strength, making great throws with excellent accuracy. He showed excellent touch on a fade route into the end zone and the ability to squeeze passes between defenders. It was clear from this week of practice that Weeden was the best quarterback in Mobile and has legit first-round talent.
From New York Times Fifth Down Blog: The argument of being too old is folly. Weeden is mature, smart, and he has a gunslinger’s mentality. He’s been the most impressive QB here in Mobile and could find his way into the end of the first round.
Nick Foles, Arizona
From Pauline: Nick Foles continues to struggle. He rarely hits receivers in stride and constantly has them reaching backwards or vertical in an attempt to make the catch.
Kirk Cousins, Michigan State
From Pauline: Kirk Cousins just threw a beautiful pass to Marvin McNutt for a long gainer. Cousins was pressured heavily by Cam Johnson of Virginia, but patiently sat in the pocket and delivered an accurate strike.
From Lande: Cousins showed that he has strong fundamental techniques, passing mechanics, footwork and ball-handling skills for the position. He has the arm strength and the touch to make accurate throws to all three levels of the defense. In the 7-on-7 period, he made an accurate touch throw to slot receiver T.J. Graham on a seam route, just over the outstretched arm of the linebacker and in front of the safety.
From Pro Football Weekly: Michigan State QB Kirk Cousins continued to impress. I thought he looked better on Wednesday than Tuesday on his throws. He also showed a little mobility when the pocket collapsed and he had to get outside and decided to take off.
Russell Wilson, Wisconsin
From Pauline: QB Russell Wilson of Wisconsin has shown he's able to make plays based on his athleticism. Wilson looked like he was going to be sacked in scrimmage for a big loss, but was able to escape the rush to make a nice completion to Chris Polk.
From Pro Football Weekly: Wilson said after the practice that one of the things he is working on this week is his feet, though he maintained that he has no problem staying in the pocket, despite his lack of height, to make the throws. He also made a nice throw running to his left.
From Pro Football Weekly (Tuesday): But in Tuesday's practice, Wilson was very impressive. He was accurate, consistent and had the best zip on his ball of the three quarterbacks.
From New York Times: Wilson is a superb athlete, but he’s very inconsistent as a passer. He’s shorter than Kellen Moore and several of his passes tend to sail high. Those passes will turn into interceptions at the next level. When he’s rolling out, his accuracy also leaves a lot to be desired.
Ryan Lindley, San Diego State
From Lande: At one point during practice, Lindley had thrown almost as many passes into the turf as into his receivers' hands. He showed slight improvement later, but not enough to save the day. He looked like a slow-twitch athlete who was deliberate in his movement. He also had the worst arm strength among South QBs.
