Pro Bowl: NFL Shows Desperation in Pulling In-Game Twitter Gimmick

The Pro Bowl is the worst exhibition in sports, and the NFL is trying to change that by grasping at Twitter straws. 

Everything that makes a sporting event phenomenal is absent when the AFC and NFC take the field every winter in the Pro Bowl.

CNBC's Darren Rovell tweets this nonsense that will do nothing to remedy what really ails the Pro Bowl, and that is its existence.  

First off, there is no competition. Hard hits take a vacation as plays like Alex Mack scoring while a couple dozen players just stand around picking their noses take place. 

There is nothing exciting about fat guys scoring when even the actual players couldn't care to tackle, nor should they. There is no reason to hurt themselves, but that leaves no reason for us to watch it. 

Second, the game itself is devoid of the full pantheon of stars. A good portion of the best players are getting ready for the Super Bowl, or just fail to go from lack of interest. 

This brings us to the grand Twitter experiment of 2012. Players are shunned from doing any social networking during actual games, but are now expected to go to one of two designated areas like they were nerdy smokers forced to tweet where told. 

I will say that the Twitter experiment does have its good points. We all follow a great deal of the players that will be tweeting and may find ourselves watching a portion of the game just to see what they are rambling on about. 

But Twitter doesn't lead news stories; it follows them. 

A few great tweets don't make up for a game that is horrible. The NFL is polishing a turd with 140 characters or less, and it won't work. 

I would much rather look for the hilarious tweets that will come from fans watching the game. Reactions to disasters and fails are always great, not tweets on the latest bump and run that nobody saw. 

Nice try, NFL. But the only idea worth mentioning about the Pro Bowl is how you plan to destroy it for good.
