Australian Open 2012: Tennis Couldn't Have Asked for Better Semifinal Matchups

Wes ODonnellJun 7, 2018

Even if you don't watch or care for tennis at all, it is impossible to deny that the Australian Open semi-finals is picture perfect.

The only Top Four seed missing from the men's and women's bracket is women's No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki.

The 21-year-old Dane was easily the best of the eight players (men and women) to be eliminated before the semi-finals.

The woman who replaces her, Kim Clijsters, just so happens to be the defending Australian Open champion.

So again, what more could tennis ask for?

Both Clijsters and Novak Djokovic are alive to defend their titles. The Roger Federer-Rafael Nadal showdown will add a new chapter. And even fan favorite Maria Sharapova, the world's former No. 1, is in position to win her first Grand Slam since the 2008 Australian Open.

Aside from Wozniacki's departure, the only other truly big name absent is American Serena Williams.

Djokovic will take on Andy Murray, a solid rival of his, for a chance to play the winner of Federer-Nadal.

Clijsters will take on third-seeded Victoria Azerenka for a shot at defending her title in the final, while Sharapova will battle Petra Kvitova in the other semi-final.

However things shake out, both the men's and women's games will have crowned a more than worthy champion this year.

The remaining Grand Slams will have a lot to live up to.
