2012 NFL Mock Draft: Doug Martin and the Best Non-BCS Conference Prospects
With six BCS conferences and only five non-BCS conferences, it's obviously much easier to review top talent from the bigger and more notable schools.
That being said, there's NFL talent across the board in college football, so here's a look at some of the best non-BCS conference prospects in the 2012 NFL draft.
Doug Martin: RB, Boise State
In the past three seasons combined, Boise State running back Doug Martin scored 43 rushing touchdowns and accumulated over 3,300 rushing yards.
He was the Broncos main Brahma Bull and took a lot of pressure off quarterback Kellen Moore and the passing game. Still, Martin is going slightly overlooked in a non-running back dominant draft and because Moore received a lot of attention throughout the regular season.
Fortunately for Martin, his efforts have earned him as a solid second or third-round pick. Coming from a pass-oriented offense, Martin has great size and power to slam the trenches in the NFL.
Provided he goes into a system that needs to improve in short-yard situations as well as the need for a stud running back, Doug Martin is one of the more complete backs in the draft.
Vinny Curry: DE, Marshall
Arguably the most complete defensive end in the draft, Marshall's Vinny Curry has that rare combination of being a true sack-master while also recording a lot of tackles to stop the run.
In 2010 Curry recorded 12 sacks and 94 tackles and forced two fumbles. 2011 would be just as impressive despite offenses game-planning more for him. Curry recorded 77 tackles and 11 sacks while forcing a remarkable seven fumbles and blocking three kicks.
He's simply a force coming off the edge but has the great football IQ to be aware of the football. Curry can fly around the end, run down a ball carrier, anchor for contain, swim inside to get the quarterback quicker or draw a double-team to allow other defenders to make plays.
Anyone drafting Curry gets the complete package as his knack for finding the football is second-to-none.
Bobby Wagner: LB, Utah State
Along the same lines as Curry, Utah State linebacker Bobby Wagner has a knack for locating the football.
The difference is that Wagner's more of a sure-tackler as opposed to a pass rusher. Still, Wagner has a great presence as he recorded 394 tackles combined in his last three seasons.
Additionally, Wagner accounted for four sacks and also has four career interceptions. He can read the run as good as anyone and provides the wherewithal to sink underneath the intermediate pass routes to help shield open receivers.
Considered a second-round pick, Wagner would be higher had the Aggies been a more traditional football program. Nonetheless, a defense needing a reliable tackler at linebacker who has great potential to blanket in coverage will welcome him.
T.Y. Hilton: WR, Florida International
One of the more dynamic and versatile prospects, Florida International's T.Y. Hilton has an extreme amount of potential.
As a receiver, Hilton compiled 3,531 yards on 229 receptions while scoring 24 TDs. With his 5'10", 183-pound frame, T.Y. is the ideal No. 2/slot receiver who can widen the field and get solid yards after the catch.
He also can provide a horizontal rushing dimension as Hilton accounted for 406 yards on 49 attempts the past two seasons, including five touchdowns. So, jet sweeps, quick tosses and reverses only make him that much more appealing.
Perhaps the best asset of Hilton though, is his return skills. As a special teams return specialist, Hilton pulled double-duty for the Golden Panthers and amassed 2,855 yards on kickoffs and 614 yards on punts, both off which combined for six touchdowns.
