2012 NFL Draft: Report Linking Redskins to Robert Griffin III Is Horrific Idea
Eric BallJun 7, 2018
So the Washington Redskins need a quarterback… time for the rumor mill to spin.
No team is more of a wild card in the QB search of 2012 than the Redskins. With a veteran defense and coaching staff firmly entrenched in their positions, they are a strong signal-caller away from potentially making the playoffs. Dan Snyder might be the most trigger-happy owner in the league and you can’t rule out anything he may potentially have up his sleeve.
Are they going to make a run at Peyton Manning or try their luck in the draft? NFL.com reporter Jason La Confra believes they have their eyes set on a trade:
"(E)xecs I talk to expect Washington to make a move for St. Louis' No. 2 overall slot in the draft, and select whichever quarterback doesn't go first overall (at this point, it looks like Griffin).
"
This is not a wise decision. In order to trade up, the ‘Skins would have to surrender their sixth overall pick and the same pick in either the second or third round. That’s way too much to yield on a player who still has a lot to prove.
While the Heisman trophy winner has a great attitude on top of tremendous statistics, there are doubts on RGIII’s ability to run a pro-style offense. The learning curve is going to be incredibly steep. Head coach Mike Shanahan has never played with a non-traditional QB before and at the age of 59, it’s hard to imagine him completely rearranging his offense at this point.
Washington doesn’t have a year or two to allow Griffin III to go through his growing pains. They’d be better off giving those picks up for three to four years of Manning.
Both players are attached with some serious risk, but Manning is proven and RG3 is a guy who has completed one magical season in a conference that was allergic to defense.
I’m not saying RGIII won’t make a great pro, but he’s not the right fight for the ‘Skins at this particular point in the franchise. Now the Jaguars on the other hand…
