NFL Nike Uniforms: Adrian Peterson and More Stars Who Must Change Their Numbers

Gabe ZaldivarJan 24, 2012

Prepare yourself for a Nike revolution coming shortly to an NFL team near you.

The league dominated by Reebok will now get a Nike makeover, as the biggest name in sports apparel will design and outfit NFL teams.

It's makeover time y'all, and that means every team will have a new look and a great deal more swagger than they had previously. This is the perfect time for some players to switch things up and change their numbers going into next season.

And now we come to the classic chicken and egg conundrum. Would Kobe Bryant have enjoyed a renaissance to his career had he not changed from No. 8 to No. 24? Or did he enjoy such success because of that fact?

Michael Jordan switched it up when he went to the Wizards and he...

Okay, changing numbers isn't all flash and bang. But flipping the script on a career can be fun, exciting and reason for fans to buy yet another round of home and away jerseys.

We all know athletes are the most superstitious group of people on the planet. We have targeted a few players who would be smart to ditch the old threads and pick up a brand new jersey, outfitted with a brand new number.

Aaliyah may have contended that age ain't nothing but a number, but in sports, a number is an identity. Here are some football stars that are in desperate need of a number change and, perhaps, a new identity in 2012.

Now, let's go get some digits.

5. DeSean Jackson

1 of 5

Like an explosion, DeSean Jackson's career has been short, memorable and beyond volatile. Jackson has the talent to be one of the best receivers in the league, but his thoughts on entitlement and wages make him the second coming of Terrell Owens

Owens may land with a new team, but Jackson should consider dropping the No. 10 anyway. If he continues to fly with the Eagles, it will mean a new payday and the end of incessant talk of contracts.

Throw on a new number and get some love back from fans.

4. James Harrison

2 of 5

We had to include the most hated and heavily-fined player in the NFL. There have been a number of open receivers who have blacked out right after seeing the No. 92 come their way.

It's time for Harrison to shed any single lasting hope that he would be a nice guy. I think he should just change his number in keeping with how many quarterbacks and receivers he has killed on the field of battle.

He may have to tick them off one at a time because they happen so often. This would mandate a rule change from the league, but I figure Harrison is pretty much sponsoring the league with how much he has been fined anyway.

3. Tim Tebow

Going by the well-known rule that every football article must make mention of Tim Tebow, we include, well, Tim Tebow.

Pretty much everyone, including your mom, has purchased a Tebow jersey by now. He could also use a much more holy number like No. 7, but I really like him to rock the No. 1. That way we can drop with formalities and just refer to him as "The One."

2. Mark Sanchez

Dude was called out by teammates following another lackluster season. While it's clear that he is still the man in New York, it's time for him to remake his image into, hell, I don't know, an elite quarterback.

No other quarterback, side from Tony Romo, could use a bigger boost in image. So, I say he should change his number and his outlook.

If not, he should still change his number, perhaps to No. 2, because that is where he should be on NFL depth charts.

1. Adrian Peterson

5 of 5

We come to the impetus of this slideshow. Adrian Peterson is one of the greatest running backs in the league, and it's because of his ability to get out the box with elusive moves and dominating talent.

It seems that he is also prone to thinking outside the box. Peterson wondered what life would be like with the new Nike uniforms and used that to consider a number change. Here is what he had to say on Twitter with this tweet

"

So I'm thinking about changing my number! #28 has been good to me, but I think its time switch it up! What do you think about the switch ?

"

And this tweet

"

I was thinking 21 or 23! Hands down I would pick #1 but the NFL rules wouldn't allow it! Only QB

"

Peterson would look sweet with a Jordan No. 23 outfit. He has been doing just fine with his No. 28 and has made it legendary in the Vikings colors. If he does decide to switch it up, I am not about to hate.
