Flip Saunders Fired: The Washington Wizards Made Smart Decision

Kelly ScalettaJun 5, 2018

Flip Saunders has been fired as the head coach of the Washington Wizards, and Wizards fans everywhere are wondering why.

Why did it take so long? It's about time!

The Wizards, in spite of having a tremendous amount of talent, have been one of the worst teams in the league that occasionally shows what it could be if they had a coach that was, at the very least, ahead of the Vinny Del Negro curve, my own personal version of the Mendoza line of NBA coaching.

Saunders' "coaching" was about as inept as it comes. In spite of the Wizards having the talented John Wall, Nick Young, Andre Blatch and JaVale McGee on the team, they have the most inefficient offense in the NBA.

Saunders has shown an incredible lack of capacity to handle the strategic nuances of NBA basketball as well as the inability to develop young NBA talent. Washington has grown increasingly worse each year he's coached the team and currently hold the worst record in the league.

This in spite of the fact they showed enough talent to beat the Oklahoma City Thunder, handing them one of their only three losses this year.

To be fair, it's safe to say that in the past (with Detroit and Minnesota) when he's coached teams that had veteran talent, he was marginally successful, but he obviously has no idea how to develop young talent. He's not the kind of coach this team needs.

It might be beneficial for the Knicks to consider firing Mike D'Antoni and picking up Flip—then the Wizards could sing D'Antoni. Both of these coaches actually are a better fit for the other team. Saunders runs a traditional, slow-it-down, iso-centered offense better that would fit Carmelo Anthony

On the other hand, giving D'Antoni the likes of Wall and McGee to play with is like putting a fat kid in a candy store!

There are no rumors yet as to who might replace Saunders as the Wizards' new coach.
