Royal Rumble 2012: John Cena Will Get Screwed by The Rock

Mike ChiariJun 7, 2018

With WrestleMania just a couple months away, it stands to reason that the build toward the John Cena vs. The Rock main event will start to pick up steam.

I believe it will start with The Rock screwing Cena at the Royal Rumble on Sunday.

Cena is scheduled to face Kane in a singles match on the undercard, but that's not where I expect The Rock to get involved. The Rock, from a storyline perspective, probably couldn't care less about Cena's feud with Kane. I expect that match to go off without a hitch and a double disqualification or something of the sort will ensue.

I think The Rock will get involved in the Rumble match itself. It doesn't make much sense for Cena to be in the Rumble match since he has already committed to a match with The Rock at WrestleMania. But over the past couple weeks it has been hammered home that absolutely everyone is eligible to compete in the Rumble.

Seeing as Cena is the company's biggest star, it seems fitting that they would find a way to get him in the Rumble. It could be explained by saying that Cena could win the Rumble, get his title shot at WrestleMania, and still wrestle The Rock anyway.

With Cena seemingly on the way to victory, The Rock could sneak in and throw him out, resulting in a brawl between the two.

This could be explained a couple of ways, but the most logical would be for The Rock to say that he wants to face Cena at full strength at WrestleMania, not after Cena had already competed in a title match earlier in the night.

I don't think The Rock will actually be a formal entrant into the Rumble, rather I think he'll show up with the sole purpose of screwing Cena over. Seeing as The Rock has been gone since Survivor Series, his feud with Cena has cooled considerably.

There is no better way to reignite it, though, than for him to screw Cena out of a title shot.

It might look a little strange since The Rock would, in turn, be screwing himself out of a possible title match if Cena were able to win the belt. But that could be explained away by having The Rock say that he had already won world championships on so many occasions that it didn't mean anything to him anymore.

The fact of the matter is that The Rock needs to start making appearances again soon, and the Royal Rumble seems like the perfect platform to start on. The Rock has continually gotten the better of Cena as he helped The Miz beat him at last year's WrestleMania and showed him up at Survivor Series.

This would be yet another feather in The Rock's cap.

I think it's obvious that the creative team's goal is to make Cena look like a decided underdog. The Rock constantly shows him up and the match will take place in Miami, which will obviously be a very pro-Rock crowd.

If that is the line of thinking, then it makes sense for The Rock to foil Cena's plans at the Rumble.

Cena has his own agenda that includes capturing the WWE Championship, while The Rock is only worried about dealing with Cena. A return of The Rock will allow Cena to shift his focus back where it should be—the buildup toward his match at WrestleMania.
