David Ferrer May Be Trouble for Novak Djokovic: Here's Why
Very little is being discussed about the upcoming quarterfinal match between Novak Djokovic and David Ferrer. When I first saw the draws, this was one of the matches I was hoping came to fruition. I am surprised that this match is being glossed over and people are assuming an easy win for Novak Djokovic. The fact of the matter is Djokovic is 6-5 lifetime versus Ferrer. This is going to be a very tight, hard-fought, grinding type of a match.
This is also going to be a very interesting matchup strength wise. Djokovic is a big hitter with more weapons than Ferrer but Ferrer is a grinder and sustains long rallies keeping the ball in play. Ferrer is relentless and machine like in his ability to keep pressure on the other player. This is one of the reasons I believe Djokovic is only just better than .500 in matches against Ferrer.
Ferrer also has one of the best return of serves in men's singles today. This could be a neutralizer against Djokovic's big serve. Ferrer has a tendency to run around his forehand frequently and crush and inside-out shot. The only problem with that tendency is that Djokovic has one of the best backhands in the game.
Ferrer will need to change a few habits if he wants to beat Djokovic but, believe it or not, I think Ferrer can win if he plays to his abilities. Djokovic will need to remain focused and stick to his game plan. Ferrer may throw a few new tricks up his sleeve and whoever wins this match will need to be able to adjust throughout the match.
I still predict Djokovic to win in four sets but they will be close, hard-fought sets. This, if nothing else, could wear down Djokovic to a point where he could be a bit sluggish against Nadal or a surging Federer, assuming neither of them get upset.
Suffice it to say that other than the final, this matchup between Novak Djokovic and David Ferrer is poised for quality entertainment.
