Australian Open 2012 Results: Biggest Busts from Opening Week

Gabe ZaldivarJun 7, 2018

The beauty that is tennis can be quite ugly at times. Some of the best in the sport picked the wrong time to play some awful tennis at the Australian Open.

The Aussie truly has turned things upside down, as stars guaranteed for the later rounds flamed out well before they should have.

Much like Pluto Nash that bombed at the box office and Battlefield Earth that never had a chance, some bright tennis stars didn't live up to the billing they had entering the 2012 Aussie.

Let's break down the biggest busts in order of Gigli wonderment to Eddie Murphy fails. The Australian Open has been a great tournament so far. As you will see, that sentiment does not extend to Americans.

PLUTO NASH BOMB

These are the failures that we really should have seen coming:

Serena Williams: I hate to put poor Serena Williams in this category, but the injury bug may have played a part in a star player that worked gingerly on the court and lacked her usual punch and power.

Williams herself will tell you that she has some healing yet to do. Via ESPN:

"

I'm not physically 100 percent, so I can't be so angry at myself, even though I'm very unhappy. I know that I can play a hundred times better than I did this whole tournament.

"

Andy Roddick: Hamstrings only seem to be good for one thing, and that is ripping players out of matches and derailing fine form.

Roddick had to bow out after he exacerbated a hamstring injury he had in December. The American showed promise, but was yet again beset by injury.

GREEN LANTERN SURPRISE

We never saw these bombs coming. Sure, they may make it up to us in future Grand Slams, much like Ryan Reynolds night in Green Lantern 2, but there is no excusing a losing effort.

Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova: There is no reason that a No. 15 player should be bounced by a No. 65 player. This was a brief moment where an overmatched player in Vania King put together every last thing she had learned in her career to deliver an upset. Fluke? Yes, but still memorable.

Gael Monfils: The French star is continually out to prove that he is an elite player. Well, losing to a 92nd-ranked player will not help matters.

Monfils' reputation took a hit in his loss to Mikhail Kukushkin, but it was one of the most memorable matches with grand momentum swings. Much like Green Lantern, it wasn't a total loss.
