Arsenal vs. Manchester United as Told by Piers Morgan on Twitter

If you're like me, you soaked in last Sunday's doubleheader of Premier League games.

First up was a down-to-the-wire matchup between Manchester City and visiting Tottenham which didn't see a winner until Mario Balotelli scored off a penalty kick in the 94th minute. It was a stirring victory for City, and at the same time a match that Tottenham fans should be encouraged by.

And then there was Arsenal losing at home to Manchester United. It's the match everyone was talking about this morning—including Piers Morgan.

Morgan is the host of Piers Morgan Tonight for CNN, a frequent analyst for FOX Soccer and an avid Arsenal fan, the latter making his Twitter account something of a riot when his Gooners lose.

The British television personality was in rare form yesterday, cracking on manager Arsene Wenger's tactics, the lack of quality in Arsenal's defense and the club's participation (or lack thereof) in this winter's transfer window.

In short, Morgan takes Arsenal football very seriously, bathing in the joys of victory and crushed under the burden of their defeat.

But it's on the particularly crushing days that Morgan's at his best and that was certainly true this past weekend as Arsenal was humiliated at the Emirates, losing 2-1 to a Manchester United team that recently suffered back-to-back losses to Blackburn and Newcastle United.

So, without further ado about nothing, I give you Morgan's tweets during Arsenal's loss to Manchester United accompanied with the action that was happening on the pitch.

9:26 a.m. EST: Morgan Cracking on United's Oldest Players

This tweet was at 9:26 a.m. EST, a full 90 minutes before the match even started. Morgan's getting the trash talking started early. 

Sadly, he'd be eating these words hours later as Giggs tore up Arsenal's midfield and Scholes set up the winner with a perfectly timed pass to Welbeck.

Maybe Morgan should have used a less agile dinosaur to compare United's senior midfielders. Triceratops, anyone?

11:49 a.m. EST: No Full Backs, No Chance

Just minutes into the match, Morgan is again tweeting about Arsenal's lack of quantity (and quality) in full backs, something he'd pointed out before the match even began.

Wenger needs quality guys in the center of his defense and he still hasn't gone after any this January. It showed in the handful of times United players just broke on the ball and ran through the defensive back line with ease.

This tweet was from United's first goal in the 46th minute (fast forward to about 50 seconds into the video to see it). Valencia is straight up unchallenged by anyone and everyone in an Arsenal shirt.

12:37 p.m. EST: Wenger Taking the Ox out of the Game

This is actually two consecutive tweets, one directly preceding another.

Just minutes before, 18-year-old Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain ("The Ox") had just given Robbie van Persie a masterful pass right at the top of the key that Persie laid in the goal with ease.

This was in the 71st minute.

Then in the 74th minute, amid a chorus of boos, Wenger decided to take out The Ox and put in Andrei Arshavin, a decision Morgan called "nonsense." Twice.

12:44 p.m. EST: He'd Probably Be Fozzie Bear

This was right after the 81st minute goal by Danny Welbeck.

You can't really blame Morgan—Arshavin looked like a marionette on the pitch, overreaching for interceptions and bumbling around in front of Szczesny like Kermit the Frog.

12:45 p.m. EST: There's 10 Minutes Left, But Morgan's Thrown in the Towel

This was probably the least funny thing Morgan tweeted all day, but it was probably the most significant.

It's the game that broke the camel's (i.e. Peter Hill-Wood's) back and lost Wenger nearly all confidence among Arsenal supporters.

12:46 p.m. EST: With No One on the Pitch to Harass, Morgan Does Next Best Thing

Just minutes away from defeat, Morgan's ready to lash out at anyone even remotely associated with Manchester United.

Since he can't find anyone, he taunts Michael Owen.

12:58 p.m. EST: Game Over

Morgan, as well as Persie, was about as distraught as the throngs of Gooners in pubs all across Holloway. It's a sad day when players have to crawl off the pitch. 

1:30 p.m. EST: Piers Morgan, Prophet

Morgan may be overreacting a bit (does anyone really think Arsenal was within reach of the league title?) but the loss may have some far-reaching effects, and the turning point in the loss was The Ox being substituted out in favor of Arshavin.

Will Arsenal finish lower than Newcastle United and have a chance at next year's Champions League spot? Probably not.

Is this the final straw for Robbie Van Persie? Time will tell.
