Manchester United Transfer Rumors: 10 Latest Players Linked to Old Trafford
The end is within sight.
Just over a week remains before the January transfer window closes, and so far Manchester United have been pretty quiet. The Red Devils brought back Paul Scholes out of retirement, and that's pretty much been that.
That hasn't stopped the rumour mill, though. Today alone United have been linked with moves for several different players.
This is a list of 10 of the latest names linked to Old Trafford. Some of them have been linked with Manchester United before now—in some cases long before. Others are just now showing up.
Will any of the moves happen? With just over a week left in the month, all are becoming increasingly unlikely.
But you never know.
Leandro Damião
1 of 10Club: Internacional (Brazil)
Country: Brazil
Position: Forward
The Skinny: Leandro Damião, who has scored once in four caps for Brazil, is reportedly wanted by United.
According to the Mail Online, the 22-year-old Brazilian is valued at £24 million. Tottenham reportedly had a £15 million offer for the forward rejected last summer.
Luke Shaw
2 of 10Club: Southampton
Country: England
Position: Fullback
The Skinny: People.co.uk reported, rather breathlessly, on Sunday that Luke Shaw, a 16-year-old Southampton academy fullback, is the subject of a "tug-of-war" among Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United.
According to the article, Chelsea had a £1 million bid rejected.
Shaw's profile on Southampton's website says he was scouted by the club at age 8. It says he has earned two call-ups to the England Under-16 team.
Nathaniel Clyne
3 of 10Club: Crystal Palace
Country: England
Position: Defender
The Skinny: The Manchester Evening News reports that United are "in talks to sign" defender Nathaniel Clyne from Crystal Palace.
According to the article, United and Palace have negotiated for more than three days. The deal would reportedly cost United £3 million.
Clyne, 20, is out of contract in the summer. He has represented England at the Under-19 and -21 levels.
Jores Okore
4 of 10Club: Nordsjaelland (Denmark)
Country: Denmark
Position: Defender
The Skinny: Okore, a 19-year-old Danish defender of Ivorian descent, has risen rapidly in the Danish national team setup and is reportedly attracting interest from several European clubs.
That list includes Manchester United and Manchester City, according to People.co.uk.
Last week, we included Okore on our list of unknown footballers you'll know after Euro 2012. A move to United or City would certainly make him less unknown.
Michel Vorm
5 of 10Club: Swansea City
Country: Netherlands
Position: Goalkeeper
The Skinny: Here's a newsflash: United need a new goalkeeper. Unless, of course, they think David De Gea will sort himself out.
If not, Swansea's Michel Vorm could be an option. According to one club official at Swansea, Manchester United and Chelsea have shown interest in the Dutch keeper.
Swansea signed Vorm for £1 million from Utrecht. United paid about £18 million for De Gea.
Javier Pastore
6 of 10Club: Paris Saint-Germain
Country: Argentina
Position: Midfielder
The Skinny: According to CaughtOffside, Manchester United want to sign midfield playmaker Javier Pastore from PSG.
Pastore, 22, joined PSG from Palermo in 2011. He has represented Argentina 13 times.
Jan Vertonghen
7 of 10Club: Ajax
Country: Belgium
Position: Defender
The Skinny: Vertonghen, a 24-year-old Belgian center back, has been linked with several Premier League clubs since last summer. Now he's reportedly getting ready for a move in summer 2012.
Vertonghen is reportedly valued at £10 million.
Luka Modric
8 of 10Club: Tottenham Hotspur
Country: Croatia
Position: Midfielder
The Skinny: If you're skeptical about this one, we don't blame you.
Here it is, though. The Mail Online is reporting that United will make a summer bid of £50 million for Tottenham Hotspur's Luka Modric.
According to the article, Modric would make more than Wayne Rooney. Again, believe it if you want.
Nicolas Gaitan
9 of 10Club: Benfica
Country: Argentina
Position: Midfielder
The Skinny: Click Manchester and Goal.com are both reporting that United are once again showing interest in Benfica midfielder Nicolas Gaitan.
The sticking point would seem to be the transfer fee. Gaitan reportedly has a €45 million release clause in his contract.
Ricky Van Wolfswinkel
10 of 10Club: Sporting
Country: Netherlands
Position: Forward
The Skinny: Like Gaitan, Ricky Van Wolfswinkel has been on United's radar for some time. The latest news is that United and Lazio are both interested in the £13 million-rated forward.
According to Mirror Football, United wanted to wait until the summer to make a bid. But with Lazio showing strong interest, United might do so this month.
We'll see.
