Australian Open 2012: Novak Djokovic Will Mow Down All Competition

David DanielsJun 7, 2018

Novak Djokovic defines the phrase "unrivaled favorite."

Opponents may call him Djoker, but he’s unquestionably the king of the tennis kingdom.  He has no competition for the 2012 Australian Open crown and Djokovic will continue to force all opposition to bow down.

The Serbian is the No. 1 player in world and it isn’t even close.  This is a competitor that won three out of the four grand slams last year, won 10 tournaments and finished with an incredible 70-6 record.  Only on clay was Rafael Nadal able to dethrone him.

Bruce Matthews of the Herald Sun reported that Djokovic talked to the press about his performance after his victory over Lleyton Hewitt saying:

"

I don't think that I need to work particularly on some shots of the game…Right now, I just want to take one match at a time, focus on the next one, and use this physical, let's say, freshness that I have at this moment.  Considering the fact that I lost two games the whole match, I think I've played really, really well.  Looking just at my game, it was really fantastic from serve, the return, all the shots, going to the net.

"

Djokovic is only 24 years old.  He isn’t going away anytime soon.

Roger Federer is done.  While he’s ranked No. 3 in the world, Federer has won just a single Grand Slam in the last two years.  At 30 years old, he’s too "experienced" to hang with Djokovic.

Rafael Nadal will continue to compete with him in the French Open, but his knees will hold him back from consistently being able to match Djokovic late in tournaments.

In this year’s Australian Open, Djokovic hasn’t lost a single set.  The most points an opponent has scored on him in a set is three.  The Norman Brookes Challenge Cup is already his.
