Roger Federer: Fed-Ex Is Proving Doubters Wrong at Australian Open 2012
Roger Federer has easily marched to the quarterfinals of the 2012 Australian Open and continues to prove his doubters wrong as he strives toward a 17th Grand Slam singles title.
Federer's dominating straight-set win over 19-year-old sensation Bernard Tomic in the fourth round was another display of how good the Swiss star is playing right now.
He is showing no signs of being bothered by injury or fatigue. His quickness looks good for a 30-year-old player, and his decision making and reaction have been sharp throughout the tournament.
Federer has now made 31 straight Grand Slam quarterfinals, which is pretty remarkable. His consistent success is something to truly admire.
His quarterfinal match in Melbourne this year is against Juan Martin del Potro, who will be a tough opponent for Federer but not someone he should struggle with too much.
Federer talked about his upcoming quarterfinal match, via CNN:
""I think it's going to be a good match. I think he's coming back awfully strong again," Federer said ahead of his 1000th Tour match.
"I was sad to see that he was out for so long after his amazing year in 2009 and I thought he had a chance in 2010 to sort of make a run for world number one."
"
The possibility of a Grand Slam final with world No. 1 Novak Djokovic could be motivating Federer to perform well in Melbourne. Both stars are on opposite sides of the men's bracket at this year's Australian Open, and a meeting in the final is the only way the two could face each other.
Back in August at the US Open, Djokovic pulled off a thrilling come-from-behind win against Federer in the semifinal. Many thought the defeat would be a crushing one for Federer but he has recovered from it quite well at the Australian Open.
Federer will be determined to set up a chance for revenge against Djokovic, and have a shot for his 17th Grand Slam singles title to cement his legacy as the greatest men's tennis player ever. Watch for Federer to make a historic run toward another Australian Open title.
