Australian Open 2012 Results: Roger Federer Dominates Bernard Tomic in 4th Round

Nicholas GossMay 31, 2018

Roger Federer reached the quarterfinals of the 2012 Australian Open on Sunday with a straight set rout of 19-year-old star Bernard Tomic.

Tomic was simply outclassed by his favorite player, and despite the disappointing result for the young star, his future remains as bright as anyone's.

"

"It's very good experience to play a player like that," Tomic said via ESPN. "You know, I don't think there will ever be as good of a player as him. I think you can only learn what he does and take in what you learned. "For me, it's a great pleasure and honor to play him. I think you learn a lot over the period when you play these top guys, top three or four guys. You can just only get better if you lose against him."

Federer has now reached the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam tournament 31 straight times, a remarkable run that shows know signs of stopping.

After his disappointing loss to Novak Djokovic in the semifinal of the US Open in August, many doubted the Swiss champion's ability to win his 17th Grand Slam singles title and further his own record.

However, Federer has looked as good as anyone in Melbourne, and now only a quarterfinal matchup against Juan Martin del Potro stands in his way of another rivalry match with Spanish star Rafael Nadal in the semifinal.

This month in Melbourne, Federer's quickness has looked good, his reactions have been sharp and his serve has been quite effective, evidenced by his 13 aces against Tomic.

There is no reason to think that Federer cannot reach the final in Melbourne. The experience and talent he has is just too much for many of his opponents to overcome.

After his crushing defeat to Djokovic at the US Open, Federer would love a chance to avenge the loss at this year's Australian Open final against the Serbian star.
