David Price: The Future of the Heavyweight Division?

Sam RobertsJan 21, 2012

If you are new to this boxing game, like many, you too will be wondering what all the fuss about these big guys called the Klitschkos is about. Word on the net is they cannot be beaten and they have even been labelled by some to be the cause of the death of a division which once was the envy of all sporting achievements.

For a newcomer to the sport to name a heavyweight fighter that isn't Vitali or Wladimir Klitschko or recently retired David Haye will be a near impossible task. But why? Because the division is lacking a class and excitement that the sport thrives on and (for better or worse) is paramount for it to be a sustainable business.

Then along comes a tall, eloquent and humble Scouser with a sledgehammer of a right hand with the skill set to take him to the top. He announced his arrival on the European heavyweight scene with an awesome first round stoppage of John McDermott.

It took the 6”8 Liverpudlian less than 90 seconds to thrice dump his foe on the canvas, each time with that wicked right hand. Victory now takes his record to 12-0-0 and sets up a clash with Tyson Fury, a bout Price believes he has no option but to take.

Talking to Sky Sports Price said: "Tyson Fury is a fighting man. People say he's going to avoid me. I know Tyson Fury will fight me because he's a fighting man and otherwise he will look like a bit of a coward.

"He's stuck between a rock and a hard place. He's not ready to move on to world level but can he fight me? We'll wait and see but I think he will."

Fury has shown already that he prefers a scrap than box and has been rocked and down multiple times in his short professional career. Price comes to strictly box, and is likely to be many people's favourite because of his power and ability to not be hit flush.

And then eventually comes the inevitable question of the these big guys called the Klitschkos. I heard they cannot be beaten? Well, sooner than later, David Price will tell us.
