Knicks Rumors: Jamaal Tinsley Would Solve New York's PG Woes
The New York Knicks won't make the NBA playoffs this season unless they improve at the point guard position, and Utah Jazz veteran Jamaal Tinsley would be a great player to help Mike D'Antoni's struggling team.
New York Post writer Peter Vecsey wrote about Tinsley on Friday, and labeled some if the Knicks' issues in his column:
"Clearly, the Knicks can’t wait much longer for Baron Davis to get healthier than he has been in years and then stay that way for what’s left of the season.
Clearly, the team urgently needs an infinitely more skilled floor coach, someone undaunted by egocentrics’ endless calls for the ball.
Clearly, the sidelines’ coach can’t get Carmelo Anthony, Amar’e Stoudemire and Iman Shumpert to take better percentage shots.
"
Vecsey is absolutely right: The Knicks cannot wait for Baron Davis to find his way back onto the court. New York needs to come together right now and win games. With the Atlantic division still up for grabs with the Boston Celtics struggling and the Philadelphia 76ers young and inexperienced, there is still time for the Knicks to make a strong run for the playoffs.
The team really lacks an intelligent playmaker who can run the offense and put the Knicks in good positions to score on a consistent basis.
As the Eastern Conference standings currently look, there are six teams—Chicago, Miami, Orlando, Atlanta, Philadelphia and Indiana—that are almost certain to make the playoffs. That leaves the Knicks fighting for one of the last two playoff spots between the Celtics and the Cleveland Cavaliers.
After making a big splash in free agency by signing center Tyson Chandler in the offseason, the Knicks cannot afford to miss the playoffs.
All those teams I just mentioned as being locks for the playoffs have good point guards, which is not surprising since all good teams have capable floor generals leading their offense.
For the Knicks to really compete in the East, they need a veteran point guard. Davis could be that player, but the team cannot afford to wait for him to recover from injury. They must start winning games now.
Steve Nash may be a better option for the Knicks, but I cannot see the Phoenix Suns trading him because the fans would be incredibly angry if he left.
Tinsley is a more realistic option for the Knicks, and he would help the team win games with his passing and shooting abilities.
