Australian Open 2012 Results: Bernard Tomic Has a Legit Shot at Roger Federer

Wes ODonnellJun 2, 2018

19-year-old Australian Bernard Tomic made a name for himself last year at Wimbledon by advancing to the quarterfinals.

This year he's taking it a step further and is about to take on his idol, Roger Federer.

It certainly hasn't been easy, but the unseeded Tomic has proven to be a seriously dangerous threat to his seeded foes.

In the first round he knocked off Fernando Verdasco, the No. 22-seed in the tournament, in five sets. It didn't look good from the start when the youngster dropped the first two, but he rallied incredibly strong and ripped off three sets to the send Spanish 28-year-old home early.

In the second round he again dropped the first set, but put it back together quickly and dispatched American Sam Querrey in the next three sets.

Things got crazy again in the third round with No. 13 seed Alexandr Dolgopolov. It took all five sets and then some to get it done: 4-6, 7-6 (7-0), 7-6 (8-6), 2-6, 6-3, but Tomic proved to not only be game, but better than that.

He'll have to be even better than that if he's going to beat four-time Australian Open champ Roger Federer. The world's current No. 3 seed hasn't been eliminated before the quarterfinals since the 2004 French Open.

That is a streak stretching 30 Grand Slams, over seven-and-a-half years and 14 of Federer's 16 Slam wins.

Tomic is an upcoming star in the sport. Federer's streak is eventually going to end.

Why can't the next big thing knock out his former idol?
