Australian Open 2012 Results: Day 5 Scores and Results Summary
It was another exciting day in Melbourne on Day 5 of the Australian Open, with many top stars living to fight another day in the season's first Grand Slam event.
The 2012 Australian Open has been short on major upsets to this point, but that means some terrific matches are on the horizon. By eliminating most of the players who never had a chance to win the tournament anyway, fans will get to see several tremendous matchups over the next nine days.
Let's examine some of the marquee results from Day 5, and here's a link to the complete list of results from the Friday matches in Australia.
Men's Singles
(2) Rafael Nadal d. Lukas Lacko: 6-4, 6-2, 6-4
Even though Rafael Nadal continues to have heavy taping around his troublesome right knee, there didn't appear to be any issues as he made quick work of Lukas Lacko. It certainly appears that rumors of the 10-time Grand Slam champion's demise were greatly exaggerated.
(3) Roger Federer d. Ivo Karlovic: 7-6, 7-5, 6-3
Roger Federer received a good test from big-serving Ivo Karlovic but still managed to advance with relative ease. Federer is on a mission in Australia to prove he's still one of the sport's biggest threats despite a lack of major titles in recent years.
(7) Tomas Berdych d. (30) Kevin Anderson: 7-6, 7-6, 6-1
It appears Tomas Berdych is using the lack of respect he received before the tournament as motivation. While he's ranked inside the top 10, not many analysts picked him to make a deep run. But a three-set triumph over a huge hitter like Kevin Anderson proves he's a contender.
(10) Nicolas Almagro d. (21) Stanislas Wawrinka: 7-6, 6-2, 6-4
Like Berdych, Nicolas Almagro continues to fly under the radar. He dominated Stanislas Wawrinka, whose career has seemingly plateaued after looking like a future star a couple years ago. Almagro, on the other hand, is still showing improvement.
Women's Singles
(1) Caroline Wozniacki d. (31) Monica Niculescu: 6-2, 6-2
Caroline Wozniacki is still seeking her first major championship, which would validate all the hard work she has done to reach the top spot. Her first match against a seeded opponent went smoothly as she played impeccable defense en route to a win over Monica Niculescu. More offense is still needed, though.
(3) Victoria Azarenka d. Mona Barthel: 6-2, 6-4
Don't sleep on Victoria Azarenka. She showed good form in an easy victory over Mona Barthel and is a legitimate threat to take home the trophy. The court matches up with her game well, and she possesses enough power to take down the other elite players.
(5) Li Na d. (26) Anabel Medina Garrigues: 3-0, retired
After struggling near the end of last season, it appears Li Na is back on track. She was in complete control of her match against the 26th seed before Medina Garrigues was forced to retire. The victory set up a must-see fourth-round match against Kim Clijsters.
(11) Kim Clijsters d. (20) Daniela Hantuchova: 6-3, 6-2
Speaking of Clijsters, the defending champion had no problems with Daniela Hantuchova. When it comes to “Aussie Kim,” it's always best to ignore the ranking, just like Serena Williams. When they play, those two players are always favorites to take home the title.
