Australian Open 2012: Stars That Are Destined to Flop

Richard LangfordJun 7, 2018

The following players' star will be shining a little less brightly after they leave the 2012 Australian Open empty-handed and disappointed.

Every player wants to get their Grand Slam season off to a roaring start, but that is just not in the cards for these players.

Rafael Nadal

Rafael Nadal started his 2012 season looking to put his injury-plagued 2011 behind him, and he promptly got hurt—while sitting in a chair!

The mysterious injury hasn't kept Nadal from winning his first two matches in straight-set style, but it is going to catch up to him and end his tournament early.

Nadal is not going to make it out of his bracket to reach the semifinals. In fact, he is going to lose in two more matches when his slight loss of mobility dooms him to a loss against the hard-hitting John Isner.

Caroline Wozniacki

Wozniacki knows nothing but disappointment at Grand Slam events, and that reality is not going to find an exception here.

The world's No. 1 female player is going to get knocked out of this tournament in the quarterfinals.

It is there where she will likely face defending French Open champion Li Na or the defending champion for this event, Kim Clijsters.

Wozniacki will not be able to beat either, as she will wilt under the pressure of a big match against a strong opponent. These are the conditions that have attributed to her past failures and they will dog her here, as she will lose accuracy on her ground strokes and serves.

Andy Murray has been ready to win a Grand Slam for several years now. The problem is that he hasn't, and that only compounds his struggles to win as the pressure mounts.

Like Wozniacki, Murray has crumbled under the bright lights of the biggest stages. He is a mentally weak player, and this has kept him from winning the Grand Slams that the rest of his abilities would allow.

To help with this, he has enlisted Ivan Lendl as his coach, and this move may very well pay off for him. It's just not going to pay off this soon.

Murray will lose to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the quarterfinals.
