NFL Playoffs 2012: Which Teams Do You Want to See in the Super Bowl?

David HeebJan 18, 2012

Super Bowl XLVI is going to be an awesome game no matter who wins this weekend. Imagine the possibilities...

Imagine the awful, over-the-top storylines that will run over, and over and over again on SportsCenter.

Since the conference championship games are being played this weekend, and I love NFL history, I thought I'd sit down and try to figure out which Super Bowl I would want to watch the most. Here is what I came up with.

4. Ravens vs. 49ers

1 of 5

Why this would be a good game

Two words: Harbaugh Bowl.

Both teams are physical, hard-hitting and play great defense. Think about those terrified receivers running over the middle with guys like Ed Reed, Ray Lewis and Patrick Lewis on the field for their respective teams.

Why this would be an awful game

Both offenses would be overmatched because of the defenses and because, well, neither offense is really that good. The score when these teams played back in November was 16-6, with neither team topping 255 total yards. Yikes.

3. Giants vs. Ravens

2 of 5

Why this would be a good game

Again, great defenses on both sides. That Giants' pass rush is pretty ferocious right now. If they did a number on Aaron Rodgers, can you imagine what they would do to Joe Flacco? Also, Ray Lewis is one of the real "tough guys" in the NFL, and I'd love to see him and Brandon Jacobs meet at the line of scrimmage one on one, mano a mano. That would be fun to watch.

Why this would be an awful game

Number one, I think this has the potential to be a blowout mainly because I could see Ed Reed chastising a shell-shocked Joe Flacco on the sidelines. Number two, who wants a rematch of Super Bowl XXXV, one of the most forgettable Super Bowls in history?

2. 49ers vs. Patriots

3 of 5

Why this would be a good game

This is the classic "offense vs. defense" game with the 'Niners having a great defense and Pats having a great offense. It would also be the classic "below-average offense vs. a truly awful defense" with the 'Niners being led by Alex Smith and Michael "I can't get open" Crabtree and the Pats playing practice-squad guys and wide receivers on defense.

Can you imagine Bill Belichick dialing up exotic blitzes for Alex Smith? Can you imagine Alex Smith throwing for 350 yards in the Super Bowl? It's a real possibility. Can you even fathom the thought of that 'Niners defense stuffing the Pats' pedestrian running game and Brady saying, "Screw it, let's just throw it 60 times?" What if that really happened?

How fun would that be?!

Why this would be an awful game

Endless closeups of a super-intense Jim Harbaugh and then the contrasting closeup of a stoic Bill Belichick, the whole "Tom Brady against his favorite childhood team" storyline, the endless parade of stories about how Alex Smith has resurrected his career and, of course, the whole "Tom Brady goes for his fourth Super Bowl against Joe Montana's old team" storyline.

So basically, the game could end up being pretty awesome, but the pregame coverage would be nauseating.

1. Giants vs. Patriots

4 of 5

Why this would be a good game

Tom Brady and Belichick going for revenge, Tom Coughlin crawling off the hot seat again and trying to win the Super Bowl again, watching Brady run for his life against that Giants pass rush again, the possibility of Brady going into "eff-you mode" (hat tip: Bill Simmons) and throwing for 500 yards, the possibility of Eli going into "eff-you mode" and beating Brady again in the Super Bowl. The possibilities are endless.

Why this would be an awful game

Can't think of one reason. Go Pats! Go Giants! This is the Super Bowl I'm rooting for.
