WWE News: Rey Mysterio Rumored to Return During Royal Rumble Match

Rey Mysterio has been out of action since August 2011 after undergoing what seems like his 237th knee surgery. 

The initial timetable for the former WWE and World Heavyweight Champion’s return had him coming back at some point in the spring of 2012, possibly around WrestleMania time. In fact, Mysterio himself had even set the WWE’s biggest pay-per-view of the year as his return goal.  

But could we see Mysterio actually return long before then? Kinda, sorta, maybe.

This morning's "Johnny Dare Morning Show" was giving away Raw tickets for the January 30th event, and they announced that the morning show would have Rey Mysterio in Studio just "one night after he performed in the Royal Rumble match."

While I think it would be great to get Mysterio back so much sooner than expected, I honestly don’t think that will be the case. 

Mysterio suffered a pretty serious knee injury in the same knee that he’s already had operated on multiple times, and barring some sort of minor miracle, it doesn’t seem like he’d actually return to the ring quicker than expected, much less more than two months before he thought he’d be able to. 

Of course, you never really know what can happen in the crazy world known as the WWE—remember John Cena’s shocking return during the Royal Rumble match in 2008?—so I wouldn’t completely rule this out as a possibility. 

That being said, Mysterio’s knee has suffered a lot of damage throughout his storied career, and I would be just as surprised if Mysterio returned as I was when Cena did. 

I think we can now expect to see all kinds of speculation about Mysterio possibly returning during the Rumble and making a big splash in the match, though, and that’s precisely what makes the match so exciting. 

You never really know what’s going to happen or who’s going to show up, and if Mysterio does indeed return, he will provide a huge lift to the match and to the WWE’s upper midcard scene as we head toward WrestleMania.
