Australian Open 2012: Sam Stosur's Upset Derails Host's Grand Slam Hopes

Alex KayJun 7, 2018

The Australian women have almost no shot of capturing the Grand Slam in their home country after Queensland native Samantha Stosur was shockingly eliminated in the first round of the tournament.

The No. 6 seed was knocked out by the world No. 59 ranked tennis player, Sorana Cirstea.

Cirstea, a 21-year-old from Romania, pulled off the stunning upset 7-6, 6-3 in Rod Laver Arena in their first match of the tournament.

The crowd was understandably upset after the 91-minute match was over, as the hometown hero crushed any chances for their countrywomen to win the whole thing.

Stosur won her first Grand Slam title in the 2011 US Open and had a No. 5 world-ranking going into the tournament. She had defeated Serena Williams, a three-time winner, to win it all and was expected to improve upon that campaign in 2012.

With this major upset in the books, you know her ranking will tumble and expectations will fall for the 27-year-old who turned pro back in 1999.

So do any of the Australian’s have a chance now that their favorite is eliminated?

Nine of them qualified for the tournament and only three advanced to the second round. A native of the country has not won the tournament in 34 years.

Jelena Dokic, a former Serbia and Montenegro star and current Australian citizen, may be their best shot.

She’s only ranked No. 64 in the world right now, but has been to the quarterfinals as recently as 2009 and is a smart player who knows how to win after turning pro 14 years ago.

If Dokic goes down, and it’s quite possible as she faces the No. 9 ranked Marion Bartoli in the second round, the Australian women have no shot of winning their Grand Slam.
