Wes ODonnellJun 6, 2018

The first round has wrapped up down at Melbourne Park and most of the game's top seeds advanced to the second round.

It wasn't easy for everybody, and one top-six seed even fell, but ultimately there were few surprises on the day.

Here is quick look at some of the important scores from the 2012 Australian Open.

Men's Singles

Janko Tipsarevic (No. 9) def. Dmitry Tursunov: 5-7, 7-6 (14-12), 6-3, 6-4

Tipsarevic took some time to get it right, but after defeating Tursunov in the second set, the Russian didn't have enough to knock off the highly-ranked Serbian.

Andy Murray (No. 4) def. Ryan Harrison: 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-2

The Brit didn't stuggle much with the American at all despite dropping the first set. The 19-year-old Harrison will be one to watch down the line, but Murray is still on track to find himself back in at least the semifinals. He's appeared in the Australian Open finals in each of the last two years.

Andy Roddick (No. 15) def. Robin Haase: 6-3, 6-4, 6-1

The American overpowered the Dutchman in straight sets as expected. The question is, can Roddick hold it together?

David Ferrer (No. 5) def. Rui Machado: 6-1, 6-4, 6-2

The No. 5 ranked Spaniard beat up on his Portuguese opponent and looks like a legitimate threat to find the semifinals for the second straight year.

Gael Monfils (No. 14) def. Marinko Matosevic: 6-5 (7-5), 6-3, 6-3

The athletic Frenchman wasn't really challenged by the native Australian.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (No. 6) def. Denis Istomin: 6-4, 6-3, 6-2, 7-5

The powerful Frenchman wasn't brilliant, but he'll settle in as the tournament moves on.

Gilles Simon (No. 12) def. Danai Udomchoke: 6-1, 3-6, 6-7 (5-7), 6-3, 6-2

Simon was put on the ropes following an interesting third set, but rebounded to fight off the Taiwanese challenger.

Novak Djokovic (No. 1) def. Paolo Lorenzi: 6-2, 6-0, 6-0

Plain and simple, the world's best wasted no time asserting dominance.

Women's Singles

Maria Sharapova (No. 4) def. Gisela Dulka: 6-0, 6-1

The world's former No. 1 wasted no time getting on track. This is a good sign for her.

Petra Kvitova (No. 2) def. Vera Dushevina: 6-2, 6-0

The 21-year-old is well on her way to putting herself in position to better her quarterfinal finish from a year ago.

Sorana Cristea def. Samantha Stosur (No. 6): 7-6 (7-2), 6-3

In the opening round's biggest upset, Stosur simply couldn't put it back together after a disappointing first set loss.

Vera Zvonareva (No. 7) def. Alexandra Dulgheru: 7-6 (7-4), 6-7 (5-7), 6-3

The Romanian took Zvonareva to the brink, but ultimately the No. 7 seed rallied and earned herself a hard-fought win.

Serena Williams (No. 12) def. Tamira Paszek: 6-3, 6-2

The five-time Aussie Open champ is still battling an ankle injury, but she got off to a strong start in her round one win. She's very much a threat to win it all.
