Chris Jericho: WWE Will Prove Patience Is a Virtue in Slow-Burning Y2J Storyline

Mike ChiariJun 5, 2018

For three consecutive weeks Chris Jericho has entered a WWE ring only to do, essentially, nothing. While it's understandable that some fans are tired of it already, the creative team is doing the right thing to ensure that Y2J's angle is a success.

After two straight appearances on RAW where he did nothing other than pick up a microphone and refrain from speaking, it seemed like Jericho would finally be involved in some action this past Monday. Jericho was scheduled to team with CM Punk and Daniel Bryan against Mark Henry, Dolph Ziggler and David Otunga.

Jericho received a hot tag from Punk, entered the ring like a ball of fire, and then simply tagged in Bryan before exiting up the stage. I'm not ashamed to admit that I don't know precisely where this angle may be going, but I have to believe that it will result in a full-fledged heel turn and eventual feud with Punk over the WWE Championship.

Could Jericho and the creative team have decided to have him return by attacking Punk immediately? That certainly could have been an option, but that is something that has been done to death. Jericho said numerous times that he wouldn't return unless there was something new and interesting in the works for him, and this current storyline is definitely both.

Jericho has been acting very mentally unstable since his return as evidenced by him breaking down and crying in his second appearance and him leaving the ring after getting tagged and celebrating on his way down the ramp. The promos touting his return were dark and disturbing, so it stands to reason that Y2J's character is the same way.

I fully understand that angles have been botched by the WWE in the past, and many more probably will be in the future as well. At the same time, though, I highly doubt Jericho would have returned from touring with his band Fozzy if the angle wasn't worthwhile.

Jericho is a bit of a jokester so I'm sure there's nothing he loves more than seeing the WWE Universe squirm in anticipation of where this storyline is going to lead. Wrestling fans tend to complain that the WWE has no foresight and no patience, but now that they're trying to build something slowly, the same wrestling fans are up in arms.

Perhaps one of the best angles in the history of wrestling was the dissolution of the Mega Powers, Hulk Hogan and Randy "Macho Man" Savage. That storyline basically played out over the course of an entire year. The Jericho angle has lasted a grand total of three weeks and fans are already throwing in the towel.

Some fans are rebelling against the exact thing that they have been asking for for so long. If nothing else, consider the fact that any angle involving Jericho is likely going to be a good one. If you subscribe to that mentality, then it will likely be much easier to remain patient.
