Australian Open 2012 Scores: 3 Eye-Popping Results from Jan. 16
The Australian Open bracket is so big that there are hardly ever any upsets in the first round.
When the first-ranked player takes on the 200th-ranked player, you don't really expect many shocking results.
Still, the tourney's first day had a few noteworthy results. Here's a look at a couple.
Alexandr Dolgopolov Struggles
Dolgopolov is ranked 13th in the world. He has been playing well as of late and, most importantly, he's been at his best in Australia.
Last year, Dogopolov advanced to the quarters—easily his best Grand Slam of the year.
Yet, he came out incredibly slow against Aussie Greg Jones, who is ranked 198th in the world.
Jones won the first two sets, 6-1 and 6-4, but then the Russian finally decided to wake up. Dolgopolov was dominant the rest of the match, winning 6-1, 6-1 and 6-2 to advance. He won't be able to keep starting that slow if he wants to make a real run.
No. 22 Fernando Verdasco Loses
Verdasco got a tough first-round draw against No. 38 Bernard Tomic. Still, Verdasco should have won this match, especially after leading two sets to none.
But he didn't.
After winning 6-4 and 7-6 to take a commanding lead, Verdasco fell apart, allowing the Australian Tomic to get back in it.
Tomic won the final three sets, 6-4, 6-2 and 7-5.
That's not what Verdasco—who made it to the semis in 2009 and to the fourth round in the last two years—was expecting.
Yanina Wickmayer Falls in Straight Sets
The 28th-ranked woman in the world probably wasn't expecting to fall in the first round, especially since she was going up against Galina Voskoboeva, who is ranked 58th.
She at least wasn't expecting to fail this badly.
Voskoboeva won in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2, and really, it was never close.
