Mayweather vs. Pacquiao: Michael Koncz Calls May-Pac 'Economically Foolish'

Tim KeeneyJan 16, 2012

Manny Pacquiao wants to fight Floyd Mayweather. Floyd Mayweather wants Manny Pacquiao.

So, why can't this fight happen?

Well, according to Pac-Man's financial adviser Michael Koncz, it can't happenat least on May 5thbecause it would be "foolish from an economic standpoint."

Yes, that's right. He is actually giving economic reasons for why a fight between the two most popular fighters in the world can't happen.

Koncz explains that a 45,000-seat venue in Las Vegas won't be able to be finished by May 5th, so they would have to settle for a smaller venue. Getting a larger venue like that instead of the MGM Grand would net an additional $30 million.

That's a valid concern, but at some point you have to stop being Alex Rodriguez or Albert Pujols.

There is no possible way that "May-Pac" would be anything less than the biggest fight in history profit wise. Yet everyone, with their ridiculous greed, is trying to make every extra cent possible. Thirty million is a lot of "extra cents," but each of these fighters will easily make $40 million, regardless of venue.

That's economically foolish? C'mon, man.

As the great Angelo Dundee put it, “I just don’t get it, (the big fight) is what boxing is all about, what Muhammad (Ali) was all about. Muhammad did not run away from (Joe) Frazier or (George) Foreman, he ran to them even when everyone thought Big George was an unbeatable, unstoppable monster.”

If Koncz and Bob Arum are really going to cite economic issues as reasons for not making this fight happen, that means they are willing to settle for a different fight.

But what happens if they do that?

Won't they make considerably less?

How is that economically feasible?

Why not make the most money possible?

So, when this historic fight continues to not get scheduled, don't blame "Money" Mayweather. Don't even blame Manny Pacquiao.

Blame Michael Koncz, Bob Arum and the rest of Pacquiao's camp.
