Matt Every: No-Name Golfer Worth Rooting for on Sony Open's Final Day

There have been two main storylines that have developed around Matt Every this weekend: That the 301st-ranked golfer in the world is tied in first with Jeff Maggert going into the last round of the Sony Open, and that he had some interesting answers to questions about his 2010 arrest for a misdemeanor marijuana possession charge.

The charges were dropped, but apparently the story hasn't been. And Every was actually suspended by the PGA for "conduct unbecoming," not possession of marijuana.

But to be honest, the way he handled the surprise interview by Golf Channel’s Kelly Tilghman, and more importantly, his incredibly honest take even after the fact was pretty refreshing, at least in my book.

“I still hang out with the same people,” he said. “I have great friends, man. If one of my friends likes to smoke marijuana every now and then, I’m not going to say, well, you can’t be my friend anymore. Honestly, man, I know more people who smoke marijuana than who don’t smoke marijuana.

I know that’s probably not the politically correct thing to say, but it’s the truth. It’s not a big deal to me. Like I don’t frown upon people doing that stuff. I don’t do it, but I don’t frown upon it.”

So why not root for this guy as he battles Maggert today? Why can't we appreciate an athlete just being honest and saying what he or she feels, whether we agree with that take or not?

And since we all enjoy the underdog so much, why not pull for the 301st-ranked golfer who lost three months to suspension in 2010 and six weeks to a broken finger a few months before that?

And hey, maybe if Every wins, he'll give us one last quote to take to the bank: "Put that in your pipe and smoke it."
