UFC 142 Results: Vitor Belfort vs. Wanderlei Silva Breakdown

Vince CareyJun 7, 2018

After every fight card fans do the same two things.

The first is that they recap the night’s events and talk about the fights that were exciting enough to bring up again.

The second is they try to figure out whom the winners should fight next.

It’s almost a tradition among fans to try to bring out their inner Joe Silva as soon as a fight card concludes, and making fights for the fighters that were most impressive and are most popular is always first on the agenda.

Following last night’s UFC 142 event those fans had one less fight to make, as Vitor Belfort already had his next opponent lined up and no one in their right minds would complain about it.

Belfort is now set to coach the inaugural season of TUF Brazil opposite Wanderlei Silva, and the two will likely meet at a PPV event in June to conclude the season.

The fight is a rematch from way back in 1998 at the UFC’s first event held in Brazil, where a rising young prospect in Belfort knocked out the future Pride legend in just 44 seconds. The fight has been eating at Silva ever since.

As far as the actual fight goes, there is really no question as to what is going to happen when they strap these two inside a cage together, the only question is who is going to fall down first.

Both Belfort and Silva possess insane power in their hands and love to stand and trade punches, which makes this fight not only a crowd pleaser but a very interesting bout to predict.

Belfort would seem to have a huge advantage since his ability to take a punch has held up much better than Wanderlei’s has in recent years, but Silva took a lot of solid shots in his last bout against Cung Le and continued to push forward and throw punches of his own.

This is a fight between powerful punchers that basically pits technique and talent against resiliency and heart, and as tough as it is to hear if you’re a Wanderlei fan, Belfort should win this fight 90 percent of the time.

This one won’t last long and likely won’t be the pretty fight anyone has seen, but it will be violent and end in a bang that will provide a fitting end to what is destined to be an exciting season of TUF.
