Australian Open 2012 Bracket: Why Caroline Wozniacki Doesn't Stand a Chance
Caroline Wozniacki may be the No. 1 women's tennis player in the world, but she doesn't stand a chance at the Australian Open.
I don't mean this out of any disrespect to her, as, obviously, her ranking as No. 1 goes a long ways in proving how good she is. That being said, I don't think she has what it takes too pull this off. Not only is the rest of the field good, and it's undoubtedly good, but everything I've seen and heard from her leads me to believe that she doesn't stand a chance.
Who am I, you ask, and where do I get this information?
Here's my reasons, and all I need is two:
1. Health
2. Experience
Let's examine these shall we?
Health
Anybody who has ever watched a major tennis tournament understands how much health and attrition comes into play.
You have to play a lot of tennis against a lot of very good opponents. If you aren't at the top of your game physically, the chances of winning go down drastically with every round you move up.
According to a report in the Sydney Morning Herald, Wozniacki was dealing with a wrist injury last week, but she claims to be okay now:
"A wrist injury that flared in Sydney last week placed a doubt over the Danish player, but after practising at Melbourne Park today she declared herself fully fit.
"I'll be ready to play on Monday," Wozniacki said.
"
I don't care who you are, even the symptoms of a lingering injury can be a huge blow in a tournament.
Don't be surprised if this plays a factor.
Experience
Wozniacki has been doing this for a while now, but she has never made it to a Grand Slam final.
While you could argue that every great athlete has a first time for everything, for being No.1 in the world, that is quite a shocking stat. There is no doubting she is one of the most talented tennis players out there, but for some reason, she just can't get over that hurdle.
Whether there is a mental block or if it's simply just bad luck, lack of experience will come back to doom Wozniacki.
Conclusion
The possible effects of a lingering injury and Wozniacki's lack of big-match finals experience is going to leave her out of luck yet again.
