NBA Rumors: Chicago Bulls Not a Realistic Destination for Rasheed Wallace
As if things weren't already weird enough in the NBA, just imagine how strange things would be if Rasheed Wallace were to make a comeback.
It could happen. Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports reported on Thursday that the retired big man is looking to join an NBA team in the near future. In fact, he is quite "serious" about his comeback attempt.
As for where Wallace would prefer to play, A. Sherrod Blakely of CSNNE.com dropped this update on Twitter on Friday night:
Well, why not? If Wallace is going to make a comeback, he may as well make a comeback with the team with the best record in the Eastern Conference. If he means to go ring chasing, Chicago is a good place to do it.
The odd part is that it's actually not all that difficult to imagine Wallace in a Bulls uniform. He is (or was) a versatile scorer who could provide a few points here and there coming off the bench, and he was always a good defender. That makes him a good fit for Tom Thibodeau's style of basketball.
It's true that there wouldn't be much of a role for Wallace to play on the Bulls, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Wallace is 37 years old and he hasn't played in the NBA in close to two years. He's probably not looking for a lot of minutes, nor should teams be willing to give him too many minutes.
But just as it's no real surprise that Wallace is interested in the Bulls, it's no real surprise that Blakely says they're skeptical. They would be, and they should be.
The main issue is that the Bulls really don't need Wallace. They have two solid fives in Joakim Noah and Omer Asik, and they're set at the four with Carlos Boozer and Taj Gibson. Wallace would be a fifth wheel, and they already have one of those in Brian Scalabrine.
My best guess right now is that Wallace will find a home in the NBA this season, as there's always a dreadful shortage of capable bigs and his track record is impressive enough to draw attention.
But a comeback with the Bulls? It's a neat idea on Wallace's part, but not a very realistic one.
