Arsenal Transfer Rumours: Matias Suarez Would Have Been Spark for Gunners

Ryan RudnanskyJan 13, 2012

After murmurs that Argentine striker Matias Suarez would be transferring to Arsenal, Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is denying a deal ever took place.

Either he likes to keep things on the hush, or the reports were premature.

On Friday, CaughtOffside.com reported that Argentinian soccer journalist Javier Suarez said the Anderlecht forward "confirmed to us that he has signed a not so 'secret' pre-contract with Arsenal for the summer.”

Wenger quickly retorted, via Mirror Football, "No, that's (all) not true."

Well, there goes that idea.

Suarez hasn't played in a league like the Premier League, but he has a style that would have fit Arsenal very well. He's an attacker who is versatile, with the ability to play wide or as an orthodox striker. I believe he would be a fine signing for the Gunners, giving them a player who could make an impact in a variety of ways.

Obviously, Suarez is no sure thing. Arsenal wouldn't know how he could cope with the Premier League until he actually got there. He would be a risk in that sense.

But Wenger has shown for over 15 years that he has an eye for talent beyond the big leagues, which has made Arsenal competitive throughout the years. Suarez very much looks like that type of player. Plus, Marouane Chamakh and Gervinho haven't exactly impressed since joining the Gunners. It would be worth giving Suarez a shot, and it could actually be the spark Arsenal needs to get into the top four down the line.

It appears talks may have fallen through, given the report and Wenger's subsequent words. If so, it's a shame because Suarez has the potential to make a difference for the Gunners in the Premier League.
