Arsenal Transfer Rumors: Gunners Must Sign Southampton Left Back Luke Shaw

Nicholas GossJan 12, 2012

Arsenal needs to add some depth at left back during the transfer window, but they might be looking at adding some future talent at the position by purchasing up-and-coming Southampton left back Luke Shaw.

Shaw is one of the better young players in English football and would be a fantastic addition for the Gunners as they look for a long-term solution at left back.

Arsenal has had recent success in securing transfers from Southampton, including winger Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger will need to fight off other top English clubs who are looking at maybe signing Shaw, including Manchester City and Chelsea.

Shaw has played exceptionally for the England U-17 team and projects to be another star left back that can one day take over for Ashley Cole on the country's senior squad.

A £4 million price is what Southampton has valued Shaw at, which is a massive fee for a young player that is unproven at the senior level. His talent and potential may be too good to ignore, though, especially given his success on the international stage.

Wenger needs a left back that can play now, and whether that player is brought into the Emirates on loan or through a permanent move is irrelevant.

With that said, Shaw will not play an immediate role this season for Arsenal if the club signs him, but he could be a major part of the Gunners' future.

We know that Wenger is typically reluctant to overpay during transfer windows, but buying Shaw is a no-brainer for the French manager.

Arsenal has problems to address for the near future, but at the same time, they cannot forget about the future depth and talent of the club.
