NFL Offseason Report Card Grades for Every Coach and Coordinator Hire so Far

Zach KruseJun 7, 2018

Let's take a quick at the recent hirings of coaches and coordinators in the NFL, with grades attached to each:

JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS HIRE HEAD COACH MIKE MULARKEY

Owner Shahid Khan's first head coach in Jacksonville will be Mularkey, who previously was the Atlanta Falcons' offensive coordinator from 2008-11. Mularkey has previously been a head coach in Buffalo, where he went just 14-18 in two seasons. In his three seasons in Atlanta, Mularkey helped turn Matt Ryan into one of the better young quarterbacks in the game. Surely, Khan saw Mularkey's work with Ryan and envisioned what he could do with top draft choice Blaine Gabbert.

NEW YORK JETS HIRE OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR TONY SPARANO

By all accounts, the Dolphins former head coach is a well-liked and well-respected coach who can bring a sense of stability to a currently shattered locker room. However, it's hard to tell how much of an upgrade he is over Brian Schottenheimer. Sparano's Dolphins were notoriously conservative, much like the Jets have been over the past couple of seasons.

Grade: C+

KANSAS CITY CHIEFS HIRE HEAD COACH ROMEO CRENNEL

Crennel's three-game audition was more than enough for the Chiefs to pull the interim tag. In his first game, Crennel delivered a win over the previously undefeated Green Bay Packers, then followed that two weeks later with a win over the division-champion Broncos. It wasn't a franchising-changing hire, but Crenell will get the Chiefs back on the right path.

Grade: B+

NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS HIRE OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR JOSH MCDANIELS

After the hiring of Bill O'Brien by Penn State University, the Patriots needed an offensive coordinator. Insert McDaniels, who was a part of Steve Spagnuolo's staff in St. Louis last season but needed another fresh start. McDaniels didn't find much success once he left New England, but a reunion with Tom Brady and that offense should make his hiring look smart.

Grade: A-

CHICAGO BEARS PROMOTE MIKE TICE TO OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR

The coach that once invented the "Randy Ratio" will now be the offensive coordinator for a team without a proven receiving threat, but don't expect the Bears to be a pass-heavy team like they were under Mike Martz. Tice will preach running the football, which makes getting Matt Forte back imperative. Again, not a sexy hire, but one that should better suit the Bears offensive package.
