NFL Free Agents 2012: Where Will Reggie Wayne Land?

Michael DixonJan 11, 2012

Reggie Wayne is heading to the Hall of Fame, but his career as a Colt has to be over. They have too many other places where they'll need to spend money.

But Wayne could still be a fantastic player for a contender. Any one of these contending teams would do well to pick up Wayne as a free agent.

We all know about Megatron, but the Lions don't have a terribly consistent second option at receiver. Nate Burleson is capable of good games, but he doesn't stack up to Reggie Wayne. More importantly, he doesn't draw the attention of the defense like Wayne does.

We've seen what Johnson is capable of when defenses are focused on him. When defenses need to also respect the threat of Wayne (75 catches, 960 yards, four touchdowns), it could open up the field even more.

Cincinnati Bengals

The Bengals are not unlike the Lions. They have young talent in place, but the drop off between the No. 1 receiver and No. 2 receiver is too great.

Defensively, the Bengals are already good and will only be better with an extra year of experience. Wayne gives a viable target for Andy Dalton, and takes defensive attention away from A.J. Green.

Signing Wayne would also allow the Bengals to use one of their two first-round picks on a much-needed running back, instead of trying to draft a receiver.

With either of those picks, Cincinnati can land Lamar Miller. Or, if they are really dreaming big, the Bengals could trade up for Trent Richardson.

Chicago Bears

This team is in a good spot to improve in 2012. They were well on their way to the playoffs in 2011, but the injury bug crushed the Bears' chances.

Still, while the Bears were on track in 2011 before losing Jay Cutler, their offense still lacked a good outside player to make Chicago a true Super Bowl contender. Wayne would change that.

Cutler would have a solid target to pass to. They're always going to be a team dominated by defense, but the addition of Wayne would give the offense the punch it needs to take advantage of the defense's exploits.

With Wayne, the Bears could focus on filling other gaps in the draft.
