Jerry Sandusky Reportedly Sat in President's Suite One Week Before Being Charged

Jun 7, 2018

Ever wonder where Jerry Sandusky was or what he was up to the week before the Penn State scandal arrived and rocked the sports world to its very foundation?

According to former Penn State linebacker Brandon Short, Sandusky was taking in the game between the Nittany Lions and the Illinois Fighting Illini on Oct. 29 at Beaver Stadium in then-president Graham Spanier's luxury box.

Via SPORTSbyBROOKS, here's what Short told ESPN on Wednesday:

Two independent sources at the (Penn State) university have confirmed to me that Jerry Sandusky watched the Illinois-Penn State game in the President’s suite with multiple members of the (Penn State) Board of Trustees.

"

On Nov. 5, a week after that game, the infamous grand jury report detailing Sandusky's alleged misdeeds with young boys was released, and he was arrested and charged with more than 40 criminal counts of child sexual abuse. His arrest ultimately led to longtime head coach Joe Paterno's firing and Spanier's resignation.

Also on Wednesday, a report from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette made it known that Spanier and the Board of Trustees knew about the grand jury investigation involving Sandusky months before the proceedings were concluded and he was arrested.

Spanier himself was contacted by the Harrisburg Patriot-News in March of 2011, when the paper first broke the story of the investigation. He informed the Board of Trustees a couple months later.

That Spanier and the university maintained a relationship with Sandusky even after they were aware of the grand jury investigation is not exactly a shock. We do, after all, know that Sandusky was not barred from the Penn State campus even after the notorious 2002 incident, in which Sandusky allegedly raped a young boy in a locker room shower, came to light.

One explanation for Sandusky's continued presence at Penn State is that Spanier and the Board of Trustees didn't want to assume that he was guilty of anything.

Another explanation would be that Spanier and the Board of Trustees were simply indifferent.

Either way, the fact that the subject of an open grand jury investigation was taking in a football game in the university president's luxury box doesn't look good.
