Ohio State Football Recruiting: Buckeyes Will Exploit Penn State's Woes

Richard LangfordJan 11, 2012

Hopefully Penn State did not get used to finishing ahead of Ohio State because it is not going to happen again for a long time. These two schools are caught up in a perfect storm to guarantee the Buckeyes dominance over the Nittany Lions for years to come.

Things would be hard enough for Penn State even if they didn't have their own problems. The Buckeyes just hired one of the game's best recruiters and coaches in Urban Meyer. This iconic coach is a powerhouse that can recruit with the best of them.

Also, Penn State does have its own problems, and that is going to destroy its ability to recruit. What 18-year-old kid wants to go to a school that is synonymous with child molestation?

Given the choice between Penn State and Ohio State, recruits are starting to bolt toward the Buckeyes, and this is not going to stop anytime soon.

Switching Commitments

Highly touted defensive tackle Tommy Schutt recently switched from Penn State to Ohio State.

This is just the tip of the iceberg. Meyer is likely viewing commits to Penn State like a shopping list, identifying any players he might want and then deciding to take on the easy task of swaying them his way.

Winning the Non-Committed

Then there is also the case of players that have yet to commit. These two schools often battle for the same athletes—like a pair of 4-star recruits, LB Camren Williams and CB Armani Reeves.

As Victory Bell Rings tells us, these two were considered a package deal. Ohio State had been recruiting Williams, but not Reeves—PSU was recruiting both.

This left PSU in the driver's seat, with the one advantage they may have had in recruiting. They apparently lost that advantage when, according to VBR, the two were troubled by the recent changes in the coaching staff at Penn State.

Williams had already visited Ohio State, and upon hearing the news of their unhappiness, Reeves took a phone call from Meyer.

Where do you think they are now more likely to land? I'll give you a hint, the correct answer does not rhyme with Penn State, and is far more similar in sound to Buckeye.

OSU Dominance

Penn State has a long way to go before they will be on anything close to a level playing field with Ohio State. The Buckeyes are on the fast track to the top of the college football world, while the Lions are going to have to fight hard from hitting the bottom.
